No, Reid Didn’t Apologize for Birthright Citizenship Position

Legal Insurrection makes the bust.

“Greg Sargent at The Washington Post posts a partial transcript provided by the Reid campaign of a speech Reid gave on the floor of the Senate in 2006 allegedly apologizing for Reid’s 1993 proposal to exclude the children of illegal aliens from birthright citizenship.

Sargent treats this transcript as conclusive proof that Reid long ago apologized, but the transcript says nothing about the birthright proposal. Indeed, it is unclear what legislation Reid is talking about, when he described the legislation as follows:

A group of people came and talked to us and convinced us that the thing to do would be to close the borders between Mexico and the United States; in effect, stop people from coming across our borders to the United States. This period of time for which I am so apologetic-to my family, mostly-lasted about a week or two. I introduced legislation.

Nowhere in the transcript provided does Reid specifically mention the 1993 legislation, which would not have closed the border.”

Sargent should know better than to throw up this obvious crap.

But a good set of eyes from the professor to completely obliterate it.

Liberals in Hypocrisy

HarryReidWatching the parade of liberals come forward to defend Harry Reid’s indefensible and yes - racist comments, it makes you wonder if they really know the damage they are causing themselves for years to come. For instance, can you now imagine that both Al Sharpton and the Congressional Black Caucus would both come out in Reid’s favor and attempt to sweep his comments under the rug?

“Sunday, January 10, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington D.C. – Today Rep. Barbara Lee, Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement in response to Republican demands that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid step down:

“I have had an opportunity to speak with Senator Reid and he apologized for his unfortunate remarks concerning the President and he understands the gravity of such remarks. There are too many issues like the economy, job creation and energy for these regrettable comments to distract us from the work that must be done on behalf of the American people.

“Over the years, I have had an opportunity to work with Majority Leader Reid. Senator Reid’s record provides a stark contrast to actions of Republicans to block legislation that would benefit poor and minority communities – most recently reflected in Republican opposition to the Health Bill now under consideration. I look forward to Senator Reid continuing to serve as Majority Leader to guide this important agenda through the Senate.

“The Congressional Black Caucus believes that thoughtful engagement and civil discourse on race is needed, as our first “Dialogue on Race” in November 2009 demonstrated. There is a deep unease about race which cannot be swept under the rug. I appreciate Senator Reid’s apology and look forward to our continuing work.”

Note the script? Sharpton used the same language:

“”I have learned of certain unfortunate comments made by Senator Reid regarding President Barack Obama and have spoken with Senator Reid about those comments. While there is no question that Senator Reid did not select the best word choice in this instance, these comments should not distract America from its continued focus on securing healthcare or creating jobs for its people. Nor should they detract from the unquestionable leadership role Senator Reid has played on these issues or in the area of civil rights. Senator Reid’s door has always been open on hearing from the civil rights community on these issues and I look forward to continue to work with Senator Reid wherever possible to improve the lives of Americans everywhere.”

The Democratic Leadership is in full cover-ass mode on Reid and the likeness of the language used to support Reid is no mistake. In fact Reid’s political career IS dead, he will not survive the 2010 election, if he indeed survives this. Black democrats should take note, your constituents most likely don’t feel the same as you do about Reid’s words, but then according to polls you’re not in step with what they feel anyway. Note this response from Rep. Earl Perlmutter (D., Co.), an African American:

“When someone like Reid can insinuate that one group of Americans has a substandard dialect in comparison to the rest of the country, that’s alarming and, frankly, disturbing,” says Frazier. “This isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue, it’s an American issue, and much broader than being about President Obama. When I first heard the statements, I wondered: What exactly is a ‘Negro’ dialect? Anyone looking at this ought to ask that question. Obviously I’m black, but I’m still not sure what Reid’s talking about. And if the Democratic party is okay with this type of statement from their leadership, well, that speaks volumes.”

It does, but in trying to salvage Reid they’re doing most of the damage to themselves and their cause.

But let’s again look at the context of Reid’s words. Reid said this in a “private conversation”. Now, what do we say in private conversation? That which we do not want others to hear in public, that which we truly believe. Reid could have well have said, “Hey I like that Barack, he’s a good black, you know, “clean”, doesn’t speak that negro language. Hell, he’s almost white!”.

Again, the language that Reid used is the key not the setting. What exactly is a “Negro” style of talk. Is such talk for African American candidates “fortunate” along with of course being “light-skinned”. So the clear meaning of what Reid was saying in private is that blacks can be good candidates so long as they don’t act black.

Note that we haven’t heard a US Senator use the term “Negro” in relation to blacks since, well, Senator Robert Byrd - a former KKK member, and yes, Strom Thurmond.

There is no other logical reason for Reid’s words. Now the question comes whether or not Reid’s words should cause him to step down from the role of Senate Leader. Again, that question has an obvious answer - yes. If he doesn’t and Democrats continue the ridiculous and hypocritical defense of him they they will go down with him.

al-sharpton_pregnantAl Sharpton, self-proclaimed defender of blacks bitten by racism on the racist remarks of Harry Reid:

“I have learned of certain unfortunate comments made by Senator Reid regarding President Barack Obama and have spoken with Senator Reid about those comments. While there is no question that Senator Reid did not select the best word choice in this instance, these comments should not distract America from its continued focus on securing healthcare or creating jobs for its people. As before Sharpton just jettisoned any right to indignation over any future event of the same caliber. Should he try he will be immediately reminded of his hypocrisy. Blacks who depend on this ass-clown for protection just got chumped.

harry-reid-incompetenceMichael Steele:

“The chairman of the Republican National Committee called Sunday for Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to step down as Majority Leader in the wake of revelations that he used the term “Negro” when discussing President Barack Obama’s 2008 candidacy.

“I think he should, if the standard is the one set by [Trent Lott],” Steele said on “Fox News Sunday” when asked if Reid should resign his post. Trent Lott resigned his post as Majority Leader in 2002 after praising Strom Thurmond’s 1948 presidential candidacy during a birthday celebration for the 100-year-old South Carolinian.
Mark Halperin and John Heliemann report in their new book, “Game Change,” that Reid said during the campaign he thought Obama could win because, while black, he was “light-skinned” and lacked a “Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

At the same time, Steele tried to deflect criticism about an alleged racial slur of his own.

Steele said he was sorry if he offended anyone when he used the term “honest Injun” in an interview last week.

The RNC chairman implied that he did not know the term was offensive.

“if it is, i apologize. It was not indended to be a racial slur,” he said”

If Steele were a liberal the liberal reporter writing this story wouldn’t even have brought it up. After all according to liberals African Americans cannot be racist, and I’m sure The Hill wouldn’t think to ask Chris Rock or Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton about their racist comments over the years. The Hill should be ashamed for trying - unsuccessfully - to change the subject.

Let’s not forget that Steele himself has been a target of racist attacks from uber liberals - one who Photoshopped him with blackface - since appearing on the national stage a couple of years ago Nevertheless, Steele is correct about the “Trent” factor. Democrats set that bar in 2002, and on par Lott’s remarks didn’t come close to the severity of Reid’s offense.

Again, Reid didn’t “misspeak”. You don’t use the language he used unless you have generational racial prejudice in your heart and mind. Reid was simply speaking from where he really thinks and feels. As Trent Lott provided the example that Democrats clamored for, so to if Reid doesn’t step down, will they forever lose the right to use the example again in the future.

Harry Reid has no choice, he must step down from the Leadership role immediately.

UPDATE: Watching the liberal media trying to excuse Reid is pure entertainment. For instance this gem from The Politico:

“Lott lost his leadership post in 2002 after saying that the country would have been better off if Sen. Strom Thurmond — a segregationist — had been elected president in 1948.

The comments — or at least the interpretations of them — were obviously different: While Lott words could be interpreted as a call for the continuation of racial segregation, Reid’s were not an argument for race-based policies but rather a characterization of racial attitudes among voters today.”

Only problem with that lame excuse is that Reid - not Lott used the word “Negro”. The word itself says all you want to know about the context of Reid’s statement and it’s no less offensive than “Nappy-headed Hos’” Lott’s words were “interpreted” as racist while Reid’s needed no interpretation. A little tip for the media, if you’re going to practice your bias and hypocrisy get a better script, this one flunks.

Harry Reid Apologizes for “Negro” comment Regarding Obama ***UPDATE: Will Reid be asked to Resign from Leader Post?

harry-reid-incompetenceThe party of racism again rears it’s ugly head again.

“Washington (CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid apologized Saturday following reports he had privately described then-candidate Barack Obama during the presidential campaign as a black candidate who could be successful thanks in part to his “light-skinned” appearance and speaking patterns “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

Journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann reported the remarks in their new book “Game Change,” which was purchased by CNN Saturday at a Washington-area bookstore. The book is slated for official release next Tuesday.

“He (Reid) was wowed by Obama’s oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama - a ‘light-skinned’ African American ‘with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,’ as he said privately. Reid was convinced, in fact, that Obama’s race would help him more than hurt him in a bid for the Democratic nomination,” they write.

“I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words,” Reid said in a statement to CNN.

“I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments.

“I was a proud and enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama during the campaign and have worked as hard as I can to advance President Obama’s legislative agenda.”

I’ll bet he’s sorry. But let’s look at this at face value. “Negro dialect”. One doesn’t use the word “Negro” as a “poor choice of words”. One uses that term when it’s been ingrained into their belief system. Of course this is no surprise. After all it was liberals who made Obama’s race an issue during the campaign. It was the LA Times that called him the “Magic Negro” and Time Magazine who asked if he were “black enough”.

This is just another example of the closet racism of many democrats, the party of which is the historical home of racism.

UPDATE: A good point. When Trent Lott was forced to resign from the leadership position in 2002 over the Strom Thurmond birthday flap Dems were all behind that. I wonder if they will be consistent to ask the same of Reid.
