And the Obama Apologetic said it was a bad night for “insurgents”. Deal with it.

“U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski is battling for her political life this morning against Republican primary challenger Joe Miller, the tea party-backed candidate who has a slim lead as ballots continue to be counted.

Miller, a Fairbanks attorney, led from when the first returns came in Tuesday night and was on the verge of pulling off one of the biggest election upsets ever in Alaska.

With 429 of 438 precincts counted this morning,, Miller had 45,909 votes (51 percent) to 43,949 (49 percent) for Murkowski.

Miller credited the support of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for his lead.

“I’m absolutely certain that was pivotal,” he said.

Murkowski on Tuesday night took a shot at Palin, saying that when Palin resigned as governor last summer she said she would use her new national role to help out Alaska.

“I think she’s out for her own self-interest. I don’t think she’s out for Alaska’s interest,” Murkowski said as she waited at her campaign headquarters for results to come in.

Miller made a triumphant entrance to election central at the Egan Center in downtown Anchorage on Tuesday night, surrounded by loudly cheering supporters with red-white-and-blue balloons.

“We did it!” one shouted.”

Still have absentees to count and it could be weeks before all the votes are tallied, but Miller should hang on to the victory.

The PDS crowd will be upping their therapy over this for sure.

Joe Lieberman - Stop Syria support of Al Qaeda

Joe Lieberman in the WSJ this morning praises the success of the surge, giving kudos to General Patraeus.  Yet at the same time he points out that all of this will be for naught if the in-roads for Al Qaeda through Syria are not dealt with.

I agree with Lieberman that it’s long past the time that we dealt with pressuring Syria to stop harboring and aiding terrorists.¬† President Bush long ago said that we would deal with any country who does so and while we are now beginning to address Iran through a reclassification of the the Revolutionary Guard, we should also show Syria that we will not tolerate their complicity any longer.

The man who found Saddam’s Bunkers

From American Spectator, “I found Saddam’s Bunkers”:

“It‚Äôs a fair bet that you have never heard of a guy called Dave Gaubatz. It‚Äôs also a fair bet that you think the hunt for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq has found absolutely nothing, nada, zilch; and that therefore there never were any WMD programmes in Saddam‚Äôs Iraq to justify the war ostensibly waged to protect the world from Saddam‚Äôs use of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons.

Dave Gaubatz, however, says that you could not be more wrong. Saddam’s WMD did exist. He should know, because he found the sites where he is certain they were stored. And the reason you don’t know about this is that the American administration failed to act on his information, ‘lost’ his classified reports and is now doing everything it can to prevent disclosure of the terrible fact that, through its own incompetence, it allowed Saddam’s WMD to end up in the hands of the very terrorist states against whom it is so controversially at war.

You may be tempted to dismiss this as yet another dodgy claim from a warmongering lackey of the world Zionist neocon conspiracy giving credence to yet another crank pushing US propaganda. If so, perhaps you might pause before throwing this article at the cat. Mr Gaubatz is not some marginal figure. He’s pretty well as near to the horse’s mouth as you can get.

Having served for 12 years as an agent in the US Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations, Mr Gaubatz, a trained Arabic speaker, was hand-picked for postings in 2003, first in Saudi Arabia and then in Nasariyah in Iraq. His mission was to locate suspect WMD sites, discover threats against US forces in the area and find Saddam loyalists, and then send such intelligence to the Iraq Survey Group and other agencies.

Between March and July 2003, he says, he was taken to four sites in southern Iraq ‚Äî two within Nasariyah, one 20 miles south and one near Basra ‚Äî which, he was told by numerous Iraqi sources, contained biological and chemical weapons, material for a nuclear programme and UN-proscribed missiles. He was, he says, in no doubt whatever that this was true.”

I wrote about Gaubatz last year just after this story in Front Page Magazine printed. Dave is legit and one of the best at what he does. He is rightly infuriated because the information in his reports showed that warning an enemy beforehand - such as Senator Rockefeller who spread the word in 2002 - gave Saddam plenty of time to shift weapons out of Iraq and into Syria.

Yet after five years the half truth that Saddam didn’t have WMD (yeah, not after he got rid of them), has become ‘gospel’, so as solid as Dave’s testimony is we need proof. He is correct that the IC community knows the whereabouts, but again, logistics.

That would mean that we would have to obtain the proof out of Syria, possibly by “detaining” a top level Syrian or two, or better yet send in teams that could bring back conclusive proof.

More than just “proving the point”, finding out whether or not Syria aided and abetted Iraq (a forgone conclusion but again - proof) would give us a hugh barganning chip in keeping them out of Iranian and Iraqi affairs.

Macsmind Public Service

The following is a Macsmind Public Service clarification for thechronically uniformed and ignorant, eg:

“Since April 2, Malveaux has wrongly and repeatedly claimed that Pelosi had no “standing” and was not acting in an “official capacity,” has attacked the trip as “political theater” and a “political stunt,” and has parroted the Bush administration’s attacks on Pelosi for going to Syria while ignoring the fact that a Republican-led delegation met with Assad on April 1. Most recently, Malveaux asked whether Pelosi’s trip was a “big wet kiss to President Al-Assad.”

CNN (hate to admit) is right. You know it’s got to be bad when fellow liberals trash Jihad Nancy’s Terrorist Tour. Now for the clarifications:

1. Pelosi has no standing (constitutional or otherwise) to deliver foreign policy packages or even to enter negotiations - much less kowtowing in a scarf to America’s enemies.

2. It’s IS political theater - That’s all Democrats know is theater. Which makes then all the much more dangerous.

3. See number 2 - ditto.

As for Malveaux’s “big wet kiss” observation, see number one about the scarf, with that submissive move, theonly thing she didn’t do is “turn out the lights” and light up a cigarette afterwards.

(Oh that’s right, she doesn’t smoke!)

Pelosi’s Dangerous Game

Mar31

Speaker Pelosi’s decision to embark on high-profile tour of the Middle East is, in my opinion, a serious mistake. It will damage the US, the Democratic Party, her own stature in the foreign arena, and only serves to enable our rivals.

While political leaders in the various countries of the Middle East might be of varying capacity in fields such as military strategy or economics, they are all very astute in the game of politics. It is how they survive. Pelosi’s motives are not going to be lost on any leaders in the region. A friendly leader could resent being used as a pawn in Pelosi’s domestic US political game and a rival would be quick to use the trip in any way possible to weaken the US in the region. In summary, this trip is a potential foreign policy disaster for everyone involved including Pelosi.

While no schedule has been announced, the fact that she will be visiting Syria has been broadcast widely. This may cause some anxiety with countries in the region who are upset with recent Syrian behavior. The government of Iraq might be nervous because Syria has been playing a role in enabling outsiders to stir up trouble in their country. They also understand that it is in the domestic political interest of the Democrats for things to go badly in Iraq. The Democrats have shown in Congress that they care much less for security in Iraq than they do for pandering to the latest public opinion polls in the US. They have little reason to believe the Democrats will not stab them in the back for short-term political gain. The same might be true with Lebanon and possibly Jordan. And I can see no reason for Israel to support this trip.

The trip also causes confusion on the part of foreign policy makers as to who is in charge in the US. Who do they negotiate with? Who really conducts foreign policy? This attempt to play domestic politics by muddying the waters of foreign policy hurts the country as a whole. The Democrats are in no position to make promises because they do not have the authority to deliver on them. The Democrats are intentionally presenting a picture of a US that is unable to act because the Legislative and Executive branches will obstruct each other and prevent anything from going forward. It is in the interest of Syria to foster such a view of a US unable to conduct an effective foreign policy and so that is why I believe they have accepted Pelosi’s offer to take part in her political circus act.

That no other countries have been announced as stops of her Middle East fact-finding mission might also be telling. There certainly is no advantage for a friendly country to be seen being used as a prop in a domestic US politician’s internal games. I suspect only countries who wish to weaken the US will accept her offer.

In the long run, games such as this one will weaken Pelosi’s and the Democrats (hmm, there’s a name for a song and dance act …. “Pelosi and the Democrats” like “Josie and the Pussycats”) stature on the world stage. A foreign country can never be sure that the Democrats might sell them up the river for domestic political gain. The House Democrats voted nearly unanimously, with only one single dissenting vote, to go to war in Iraq. When public opinion changed, rather than play the role of leader and act to influence that opinion, they have simply changed their spots to fit the background. This behavior tells a foreign country that the US can not be trusted. The Democrats might be with you one minute and against you the next. They have no overall strategy or guiding principles other than being against the opposition political party at all costs.

Maybe the Democrats are so naive as to believe that they can undo the damage they are causing now should they gain the White House. I don’t think world leaders are that naive when it comes to political gaming. The message has been sent and I believe it has been received; the Democrats are not to be trusted. They will turn on you in a second and they will simply react to the Republicans. The Democratic Party’s foreign policy is simple, they simply oppose whatever the Republican position is.

So go ahead, Speaker Pelosi, make a fool out of yourself, your party, and your country by allowing yourself to be used as a pawn in Syria’s foreign policy games and undermining US foreign policy. But mark my words, those chickens will come home to roost. They always do.
