“Swedish authorities say they have issued an arrest warrant for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, on accusations of rape and molestation.
The warrant was issued late on Friday, said Karin Rosander, communications head at Sweden’s prosecutors’ office.
Swedish police have been trying to contact Mr Assange, but have not yet been able to, she told the BBC.
Wikileaks, criticised for leaking Afghan war documents, quoted him saying the charges were “without basis”.
The message, which appeared on Twitter and was attributed directly to Mr Assange, said the appearance of the allegations “at this moment is deeply disturbing”.
In a series of other messages posted on the Wikileaks Twitter feed, the whistle-blowing website said: “No-one here has been contacted by Swedish police”, and that it had been warned to expect “dirty tricks”.”
This may provide the opportunity to bring Assange where US/Interpol agencies can gain access to him. Being that the chicken-shit hides out in coffee shops with a laptop they are most likely going to have to nab him, as he’s unlikely to voluntarily give himself up.
As I said before I’m told and am confident that US Intelligence has a bead on him just waiting for an opportune moment to get him. If they do they have an excellent case for charging him with espionage for disclosing US Government secrets. I’ve noted that the US is approaching other allies to rein him in.
I’m told if he goes ahead and issues another 17,000 documents a nab would be imminent regardless of allied assistance. Additionally it’s likely that a “Green Light” would be issued as well.
UPDATE: Via Hot Air, prosecutors withdrew the warrant, citing the charges are “without basis”. Strange indeed since Sweden leads European nations in rape statistics at about 23 for every 100,000 and were violent crime has increased 200 percent since 2006. So the question is just how much probable cause did the Swedes need, or was the judge “called off”?
Something isn’t right at all about this. Nevertheless it may not be necessary to nab him anyway. I’m fully expecting the US to draw up formal charges in the weeks to come.
