Just another example of Obama’s distain for the working class.
Transcript:
“The problem is not technical, uh, and the problem is not mastery of the legislative intricacies of Washington. The problem is, uh, can you get the American people to say, “This is really important,” and force their representatives to do the right thing? That requires mobilizing a citizenry. That requires them understanding what is at stake. Uh, and climate change is a great example.
You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know — Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.
They — you — you can already see what the arguments will be during the general election. People will say, “Ah, Obama and Al Gore, these folks, they’re going to destroy the economy, this is going to cost us eight trillion dollars,” or whatever their number is. Um, if you can’t persuade the American people that yes, there is going to be some increase in electricity rates on the front end, but that over the long term, because of combinations of more efficient energy usage, changing lightbulbs and more efficient appliance, but also technology improving how we can produce clean energy, the economy would benefit.
If we can’t make that argument persuasively enough, you — you, uh, can be Lyndon Johnson, you can be the master of Washington. You’re not going to get that done.”
Not of course the first time Obama took a shot at things close to the heart of the working class, remember?
h/t Newsbusters.
“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.”
“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
With a tight race in Virginia, this should help McCain.
UPDATE: As as I said this will not sit well with coal miners and the tens of thousands of other employees of that industry.
“The senior vice president of the West Virginia Coal Association called Obama’s comments “unbelievable.”
“His comments are unfortunate,” Chris Hamilton said Sunday, “and really reflect a very uninformed voice and perspective to coal specifically and energy generally.”
Hamilton noted other times Obama and vice presidential candidate Joe Biden have made seemingly anti-coal statements.
“In Ohio recently, when Joe Biden said ‘not here’ about building coal-fired power plants — this is exactly what will happen,” Hamilton said. “Financing won’t be directed here. It will all go aboard for plants elsewhere in the world. The United Sates is importing more coal today from Indonesia, South Africa and Colombia than we ever have.
“If we’re going to create a situation where coal-fired power plants are at that much of a disadvantage, there will be new ones built. But as Biden said, just not here.”
Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s state director said Obama’s statements are troubling, especially for West Virginians.
“I think this clearly shows the attitude the Obama-Biden ticket has toward coal,” Ben Beakes said Sunday. “Rhetoric is cheap, but behind closed doors what they tell their supporters – that’s what we have to take as gospel.
“They’re definitely not friends of coal.”
We are getting the message out in West Virginia, Virginia as I speak.

2He has tried to claim he was taken out of context. he was not. Jake Tapper has the entire statement on his site. Obama was coddling the far left enviros in SF who hate coal and think we can meet our energy needs without it.
RedState has a similar piece of nonsense from the teleprompter Jesus on agrucirulture which your Fla listeners might need to here..he’s not crazy about agriculture, either, blames it for everything from global warming to the heartbreak of psoriasis.

4Obama’s social experiment … or, should I say Socialist experiment, will bring America to it’s knees! America has more coal than any other country in the world. Coal is one of America’s greatest natural resources, and our most abundant source of fuel. Our economy and our National Security is extremely intertwined with coal. We should be supporting and promoting clean coal. The thought that Obama would possibly bankrupt our coal industry is scary. Obama’s 20 year history of embracing radical ideas, radical people and radical change to our country allows this candidate with virtually no experience, to gamble with our constitution, our economy, our national security, and our future. Keep America safe and prosperous, … Elect McCain/Palin on November 4th !!!
