“President-elect Barack Obama said this weekend that he does not expect to close Guantanamo Bay in his first 100 days in office.
“I think it’s going to take some time and our legal teams are working in consultation with our national security apparatus as we speak to help design exactly what we need to do,” Obama said in an exclusive “This Week” interview with George Stephanopoulos, his first since arriving in Washington.
“It is more difficult than I think a lot of people realize,” the president-elect explained. “Part of the challenge that you have is that you have a bunch of folks that have been detained, many of whom may be very dangerous who have not been put on trial or have not gone through some adjudication. And some of the evidence against them may be tainted even though it’s true. And so how to balance creating a process that adheres to rule of law, habeas corpus, basic principles of Anglo-American legal system, by doing it in a way that doesn’t result in releasing people who are intent on blowing us up.”
But Obama said unequivocally that it will close. “I don’t want to be ambiguous about this. We are going to close Guantanamo and we are going to make sure that the procedures we set up are ones that abide by our Constitution. That is not only the right thing to do but it actually has to be part of our broader national security strategy because we will send a message to the world that we are serious about our values.”
Of course during the honeymoon Obama could promise anything. However now that he has received the intel brief which detailed the types of prisoners Gitmo is holding, he knows how “complicated” closing it would be.
This is only one of the few suprises that will send lefties screaming “impeach him”, the other will be that they can forget about any “war crime trials” for Bush/Cheney. Further on in the interview.
“Obama said that he is not ruling out prosecution for crimes committed by the Bush administration and left open the possibility of appointing a special prosecutor or commission to independently investigate abuses of power and illegal activity.
Obama’s comments came in response to the most popular question on his own Web site, www.change.gov, which has received 23,000 votes on the “Open for Questions” portion of the site. Bob Fertik of New York who runs the Democrats.com Web site asks Obama, “Will you appoint a special prosecutor — ideally Patrick Fitzgerald — to independently investigate the gravest crimes of the Bush administration, including torture and warrantless wiretapping?”
“We’re still evaluating how we’re going to approach the whole issue of interrogations, detentions, and so forth. And obviously we’re going to be looking at past practices and I don’t believe that anybody is above the law.” Obama said. “But my instinct is for us to focus on how do we make sure that moving forward we are doing the right thing. That doesn’t mean that if somebody has blatantly broken the law, that they are above the law. But my orientation’s going to be to move forward.”
When pressed by Stephanopoulos as to whether he will instruct his Justice Department to investigate such accusations, Obama deferred to his nominated attorney general, Eric Holder.
“When it comes to my attorney general he is the people’s lawyer… His job is to uphold the Constitution and look after the interests of the American people, not to be swayed by my day-to-day politics. So, ultimately, he’s going to be making some calls, but my general belief is that when it comes to national security, what we have to focus on is getting things right in the future, as opposed to looking at what we got wrong in the past.”
Translation: It’s not going to happen. Obama has been fully briefed on the successful tactics that have kept America safe for eight years. He’s savy enough to know that if he changes just one of those tactics and we are attacked, he will bear the responsibility and that will define his presidency.
The Obama administration will not investigate the Bush administration for a few simple reasons. He’s seen what’s behind the wall of the War on Terror, and knows now the fact from fiction. Most of the lefty rhetoric on rendition (Clinton did it), interrogation and such is just that – rhetoric based on ignorance of the dangers presenting this country. Additionally it’s no doubt that he will have his own issues to deal with once entering office, as he’s already had several issues even before entering office.
I find it amusing that lefties are still looking for a Fitzmus by wanting Patrick Fitzgerald to prosecute Bush/Co. IN fact Fitzgerald may just be the the prosecutor – through Blagojevich’s trail – uncover yet more about Obama we haven’t known so far.

Mac, mac, you are such a dreamer. Fitz, ever the consumate politician, has asked for, and received, a 90 day extension before he is required to press charges against Blagojevich. Now, one would think that when you arrest someone, you have enough on them to prosecute. But apparently not in this case.
My best guess is that Blago will be removed from office by the Illinois Senate. But here’s the rub to that; who will provide the Illinois senate with the information required to remove Blago from office? Will Fitz give that information to them allowing Blago’s lawyers to rip it apart prior to Fitz going to trial? And is Fitz really willing, when his job is on the line due to an incoming administration, to connect the dots between Blago and Rahm Emanuel and Obama? My guess is a loud “NO”.
And here is an even more juicy tidbit: will the MSM press for the Illinois senate hearing to be public? Or do they have no reporters to send to Springfield as they are still in Wasilla, AK, trying to dig up any contrived dirt they can find on Sarah Palin?
Have no doubt, that weasel Henry Waxman, will be demanding hearings on the war crimes of George Bush and Dick Cheney. Lots of pomp and circumstance, but no real meat on the plate. But if George Bush is smart, and I think he is, he will give a pardon to anyone involved in the interrogation procedures he approved. And that would include all the CIA, Dick Cheney and himself.
“The One” will appease his far left wing by signing the Freedom of Choice Act, and other bills that Nancy Pelosi and Dirty Harry Reid will shove through. But GITMO, yeah, you’re right, “The One” now knows the facts about the place and that others nations are not willing to take these Muslim thugs. Better to let the U.S. keep them locked up and feeding them religiously correct chicken and rice. And the promise to close GITMO will be “forthcoming” as he makes one excuse after another to explain away the delay.
Obama is now, and always has been, out of his league. He is the first greatest hoax ever permeated on the American public, the second being climate change (the term “global warming” now being so 20th century. He is a PR campaign dreamed up by David Axelrod, and Alexrod will have his work cut out for him now for the next four years trying to change the rhetoric to make his product look good.
