More reason our government is more corrupt than ever. But not from the Bush Adminstration, but from the partisan hacks on the hill.
“Next month in Atlanta, a federal court will hear the high-profile appeal of former Alabama governor Don E. Siegelman, whose conviction on corruption charges in 2006 became one of the most publicly debated cases to emerge from eight years of controversy at the Bush Justice Department. Now new documents highlight alleged misconduct by the Bush-appointed U.S. Attorney and other prosecutors in the case, including what appears to be extensive and unusual contact between the prosecution and the jury.
The documents, obtained by TIME, include internal prosecution e-mails given to the Justice Department and Congress by a whistle-blower during the past 18 months. John Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, which investigated the Siegelman case as part of a broader inquiry into alleged political interference in the hiring and firing of U.S. Attorneys by the Bush Justice Department, last week sent an eight-page letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey citing the new material.
Conyers says the evidence raises “serious questions” about the U.S. Attorney in the Siegelman case, who, documents show, continued to involve herself in the politically charged prosecution long after she had publicly withdrawn to avoid an alleged conflict of interest relating to her husband, a top GOP operative and close associate of Bush adviser Karl Rove. Conyers’ letter also cites evidence of numerous contacts between jurors and members of the Siegelman prosecution team that were never disclosed to the trial judge or defense counsel.
The letter to Mukasey is a signal that Democrats intend to probe what critics call the “dark side” of the Bush Administration even after it leaves office, according to congressional sources. Besides the Siegelman prosecution, such investigations could focus on the authorization of harsh interrogation methods and the role of Karl Rove and former White House aide Harriet E. Miers in the firing of U.S. Attorneys.”
Nonsense. I know the US attorneys that were involved in the prosecution. The only “darkside” from from Siegleman himself. To recap Siegleman was indicted and convicted on charges related to a widespread racketeering conspiracy that included bribery and extortion in exchange for official acts.
The evidence at trial was substantial and damning and he was appropriately sentenced. Jill Simpson is a liar and was not an aide to Rove but a low level volunteer, a point made clear here.
The only abuse of power in this case came from Don Siegelman himself.

1Precisely why, with Siegalman out on bail, this case must be reviewed by the federal court.
I have great confidence that the criminals will be held accountable, and the corrupt should surely be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law when they were acting illegally as agents of the American people.
I suspect, though, that when justice catches up with them, it’ll be Republican feds who abused their power under a lawless regime repudiated by the voters in the last two elections.
I’m glad you oppose the filth of corruption, Mac, even when it’s your good friends who will go down. The wheels of justice are turning, and the cancer on the body politic will be cut out. Wouldn’t it be nice if our Justice Department were clean, and it was just some sleazy Democrat politician who stank?
I remember when Republicans claimed to care about law and order. What a farce that was.

2Doesn’t change the fact of the facts of the case contained in the indictment, and that a jury of his peers found him guilty of. That IS the the fundamental rule of law.
It’s funny how Democrats who get their hands caught in the cookie jar find a way to blame Republicans – such as William Jefferson.
Again, it will be reviewed, and upheld. Siegalman will be returned to jail.

3Mac I personally know one of the prosecutors, too. This is pure desperation by the former governor and political thuggery of which we have been warned by Michael Barone. So Skeptical, in regards to the truth, you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about what you speak, with a huge emphasis on the truth. Absolutely nothing.
Illegitimate victories. We know to which party those words apply and so do they. What a shallow, empty role they play in this world.
