If you have been reading here for a while you know I detest polls. But CNN’s “Libby Poll” is almost laughable:
“WASHINGTON (CNN) — Nearly 70 percent of Americans oppose a presidential pardon for former White House aide Lewis “Scooter” Libby after his conviction on perjury and other charges related to a CIA agent’s exposure, according to a CNN poll out Monday.
Just 18 percent said they would support a pardon for Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, while 69 percent said they opposed the idea. Meanwhile, a narrow majority said they believe Cheney was part of a cover-up in the case.
The new poll was conducted for CNN by Opinion Research Corp. between Friday and Sunday. Pollsters quizzed 1,027 adults for the survey, which had a sampling error of 3 percentage points.”
Now as you know – polls use methodology so it’s important to find out just who did they ask. CNN doesn’t tell us – because it’s incredibly slanted – you guessed it – to the left. Here is the quote from the front page of the report.
“Interviews with 1,027 adult Americans, including 401 registered voters who describe themselves as Republicans Independents who lean Republican, conducted by telephone Opinion Research Corporation on March 9-11, 2007. The margin of sampling error for results based on the total sample is plus or minus 3 percentage points and for results based half-samples is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.”
First, polling on the weekend always means a left slanted poll (Republicans are never home on the weekends as they know how to enjoy life). So 1027 – 401 (supposed Republicans) leaves a split between 626 Democrats, middle of the road independents and undecided.
Not hard to see how they got 69%.
And they call themselves “The Most Trusted Name in News”.
Yeah, bogus news.

1It sounds accurate to me, based on your math. Most everyone other than a Republican base doesn’t feel he should be pardoned. Republicans currently represent 31% of this country. Ergo, the 70% doesn’t sound wild. Just because the base lines up behind Bush doesn’t mean most of the country is behind Scooter. Just your friends, Macsmind, just your friends. The rest of us (e.g. 70% of the country)(e.g. the overwhelming majority) disagree with you about the competence of this President, the execution of the war, and, yes, whether a convicted liar should be pardoned. I know, after being on top for six years, it hurts to suddenly realize how deeply Republicans have alienated everyone else (e.g. 70% of the rest of th country) with their mismanagement, venom, ideology and arrogance, but you have. It may take one or two more elections (and thrashings) before your realize how low you have fallen and what work it will take to climb back. Meanwhile, please, keep on sneering at polls on whatever issue you are in favor of which, I predict safely, will score somewhere between 25-35%. And keep on believing the rest of us are idiots. Go for it.

2Cheers ‘hastingspete’ for explaining reality. One of the chief reasons that the Republicans tanked in the last election was that they truely believed, as Macsmind, that 51% of the country was Republican simply because the won that percentage in 2004. They’ve betrayed the good faith of the independents and undecided when they set up a cartel and graft machine — in addition to failing to produce on any of the promises on the war, the economy, integrity, etc. The majority of the country now despises them and they still can’t believe they’ve been found out. Macsmind just shows the vast ignorance they all have about who the country is and what the country stands for.
