Just back in from the pub to catch SNL. Chris Rock was doing the lead in monologue and the end punch line was if people were worried whether or not Barak Obama could be the first black president in ’08, don’t worry he said, “We already had a retard”, making a lame reference to President Bush.
Not funny Rock, not at all – and as you liberals like to remind people – not even politically correct.
The word “retarded” as he used it is insult and hateful slur against those with developmental disabilities. It is an insult also to those – like myself – who have family members or friends who have developmental disabilities or developmental delay – which are the correct terms.
To use it to make a tired old and over-used, and incidently incorrect – unless you graduated from Harvard “Stupid Bush” slur is lame. If that’s the best he can do his career is over. As far as I’m concerned he just had a Michael Richards moment.
Saying that I demand that NBC issue an on air apology. Rock’s slur is not funny nor acceptable. If you are with me and especially if you have developmentally disabled children or other family members or friends let them know if you too are offended and join in the demand that NBC/Universal do “the right thing”.
Additionally please pass this post to as many bloggers as possible to help put the pressure on NBC to correct this injustice.
Here is the page for NBC/Universal. Select the pull down for Saturday Night Live and demand that they make an on air apology. On monday I will be contacting the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities with a clip (coming soon) of Rock’s appearance. I know they will not be pleased and no one should be.

1Maybe this explains Chris Rock: March 18, 2007 — COMEDIAN Chris Rock dished to Sirius Satellite Radio about his two biggest addictions: drugs and therapy. When asked if he’s ever been to therapy, Rock responded, “I have to go to therapy all the time. I need therapy. Or drugs. You quit for a while and then you know, it’s like, ‘I’m getting a little crazy again. Maybe I should go back.’ ”
Amazing how one guy can be “stupid” and “retarded” and still “trick” these people, including Mrs. Bill Clinton, supposedly the smartest woman in America.
