South Carolina is one place where candidates like Perry and Santorium have to do well or it’s likely the end of the road. Frankly I’m surprised Romney is doing so well. But as this poll tells us:
“Mitt Romney continues to hold a modest lead in South Carolina’s Republican primary for President. He’s at 29% to 24% for Newt Gingrich, 15% for Ron Paul, 14% for Rick Santorum, 6% for Rick Perry, 5% for Jon Huntsman, and 1% for Buddy Roemer.
Things haven’t changed too much at the top in the last week. Romney is down 1 point from his pre-New Hampshire standing, while Gingrich has gained a point. There’s more movement in the middle. Paul has gained 6 points to move into 3rd place, while Santorum has dropped by 5 points. Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman have each picked up a single point and remain in 5th and 6th place respectively.
Why is Romney winning South Carolina? Voters there are overwhelmingly focused on the economy this year and that’s working to his advantage. 39% say jobs and the economy are their top issue, closely followed by 34% who pick government spending and reducing the debt. Asked who they trust most on economic issues 35% pick Romney to 25% for Gingrich, 16% for Paul, and 10 for Santorum. And despite the attacks on it this week Romney’s business background is an asset for him. 58% have a favorable opinion of his record in business to just 27% with a negative view of it.”
The economy is on my mind, your mind, everyone’s mind. I’m like a lot of Americans, watching the signs, worried where the debt and the world market is going to lead. Right now everyone is looking for someone they think that can not only lead to fix the issues, but who can of course beat Barack Obama who’s primarily responsible for the mess.
Looking ahead to Florida Romney’s up 15 points. Santorium is coming in 3rd, with Perry a distant 5th.
The nomination is Romney’s to lose at this point. The Bain attacks (stupid from a conservative standpoint) haven’t made a dent. Again saving some unseen disaster he’s the GOP candidate.

1Actually, Mac, you’re wrong about the Bain attacks (along with the NY/DC talking heads that claim they’re conservatives but want the establishment to continue not rocking their own boat):
Mitt Romney had a choice; he could run on his record as a governor which would have destroyed him as a conservative candidate (and he knew it) or he could run on his business acumen at Bain. So Romney made the choice and made Bain Capital the flag he planted in his claim to be the one who should be in the Oval Office. It is good to get any thing out now, and not later when Obama/Axelrod springs it on him in October should Romney be the nominee. And don’t think that Obama doesn’t have access to all those Bain records that will suddenly be (anonymously) leaked out to the public just weeks before the general election. Do you remember a guy from Illinois named Ryan?
Once again, the American public is being herded like lemmings to support the least conservative name on the GOP primary ticket (except for that lunatic, Ron Paul). And just as we swollowed our pride and voted for McCain, if Romney is the nominee, we will have to endure another four years of Obama.
It’s sad, really. That Americans have come so far that they are now totally American Idol voters who care naught for a candidates record and what they have actually acheived as a conservative. And while Obama’s campaign slogan was “Change We Can Believe In”, Romney’s should be “No Change.”
