As I told you over the weekend, the federal grand jury in Alexandria Virginia is determining whether or not to charge Julian Assange with spying. It was brought together just after the Thanksgiving Weekend.
Though the grand jury is secret, I’m told they are expected to return an indictment against Assange under the The Espionage Act of 1917. Though never used successfully against a media outlet, it’s the belief of the grand jury that Assange and Wikileaks do not fulfill the definition of “press”.
A possible angle reached by the grand jury is that Julian Assange knowingly received stolen classified documents and exposed them to foreign powers antagonistic to the United States. This would be an interesting approach and could even be applied to editors of news organizations that participate in the obtaining of documents to divulge them to the public (such as the Ny Times?).
Nevertheless it’s not know when the indictment will be returned. Stay tuned.
