Julian Assange is about to be taken into custody by British authorities, possible before the end of the weekend. Officials have stated that he will not be allowed to leave the country and have blocked his exit by revoking his travel credentials. So what’s the hold up? Apparently the previous warrant for Assange for rape had issues and Swedish authorities have corrected it.
Via this site with the details:
“Swedish authorities have issued a new warrant, the second in recent days for arresting the founder of the controversial website Wikileaks Julian Assange. He is accused of rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion during his encounter with two women in Sweden earlier this year. The previous warrant had a procedural error, because of which, according to the British police they could not arrest Assange in Britain, where, according to some sources, he is presently living.
Meanwhile, Swedish lawyer of Assange Bjorn Hyurtig said in an interview to Swedish radio that his client as well as his British lawyer will appeal against his possible extradition to Sweden.
“I have submitted an appeal to the Stockholm district court. The appeal will be transferred to the court of appeal for review,” said Mr. Hurtig. “I expect a decision from the court of appeal in the next couple of days.”
British media earlier reported that Assange is in the vicinity of London, where his friends harbor hackers and employees of Wikileaks. Moreover, his British lawyer Mark Stevens hinted that his client is not going to hide from the authorities of the United Kingdom.
At the same time, the Swedish National Criminal Police said that they will issue an international arrest warrant for Mr. Assange Friday afternoon.
“We have received a request to issue an international arrest warrant for Mr. Assange from the prosecutor, and I expect that it will be executed this afternoon,” said Superintendent Tommy Kangasvieri from the Swedish National Criminal Police.”
