Senator Robert Byrd is dead and the Washington Post gives us all we need to know about this “colorful man”.
“As a young man, Mr. Byrd was an “exalted cyclops” of the Ku Klux Klan. Although he apologized numerous times for what he considered a youthful indiscretion, his early votes in Congress — notably a filibuster against the 1964 Civil Rights Act — reflected racially separatist views. As those views moderated, Mr. Byrd rose in the party hierarchy”
Of course those views never changed. In 2005 he held up Condi Rice’s confirmation as Secretary of States, referring to her as “uppity”. Rice was the first black ever nominated.
Then of course his reference to “White Niggers” on national TV.
Thus let’s keep his legacy as it was, a racist dead at 92.
UPDATE: Reason.
