Again, since I agreed with Ed Whelan’s decision to out Publius, aka John F. Blevins of the South Texas College of Law, he nonetheless issues an apology today.

“On reflection, I now realize that, completely apart from any debate over our respective rights and completely apart from our competing views on the merits of pseudonymous blogging, I have been uncharitable in my conduct towards the blogger who has used the pseudonym Publius. Earlier this evening, I sent him an e-mail setting forth my apology for my uncharitable conduct. As I stated in that e-mail, I realize that, unfortunately, it is impossible for me to undo my ill-considered disclosure of his identity. For that reason, I recognize that Publius may understandably regard my apology as inadequate.”

As I agreed – as do others – that Whelan had a right to out Publius, I have a feeling that NRO editors had a play in this. Would be the first time they shied from controversy. (UPDATE: Whelan denies this)

However the issue stands with so-called anonymous bloggers who use their cloak of secrecy to attack others. Mr. Blevins vacated any right to privacy the moment he decided to resort to ad homen attacks on Whelan. He got what he deserved.

I’m not taking Whelan’s side necessarily, but if Publius can’t take the heat, he shouldn’t be spouting off.

Let it be a lesson to others, remember, we know who you are.
