I don’t know where Simon got his info, but it’s wrong.
“A member of the Republican National Committee told me Tuesday that when the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the “Democrat Socialist Party.”
When I asked if such a resolution would force RNC Chairman Michael Steele to use that label when talking about Democrats in all his speeches and press releases, the RNC member replied: “Who cares?”
Which pretty much sums up the attitude some members of the RNC have toward their chairman these days.
Steele wrote a memo last month opposing the resolution. Steele said that while he believes Democrats “are indeed marching America toward European-style socialism,” he also said in a (rare) flash of insight that officially referring to them as the Democrat Socialist Party “will accomplish little than to give the media and our opponents the opportunity to mischaracterize Republicans.”
As a member in leadership within the South Florida GOP this is the first I heard of it, and after asking around I got a few smirks that perhaps Mr. Simon was “punked”. It’s not the first time Simon tried to dig up some stink that turned out not to be true. Nevertheless there is no need to “rebrand” the Democratic Party something that is – at least among the actions of it’s leadership – is already true.

1Mac, attended a dinner last night where Gov. Rick Perry (R-Tx) was the key note speaker. Before his speech, I had a chance to talk to him a bit and was informed that he, along with “other” governors, are going to push the enforcement of the 9th and 10th Amendments of the U.S. Constitition. He said that Texans knew better how to manage Texas than Washington, D.C. and that the constant drifting away from the Constitition needed to end.
During the entire evening, the discussion was not Democrats. Rather it was how to heal the divisions within the party. But it was also made clear that moving more to the center (meaning, left) was not going to happen in the Texas GOP and that we needed to move back to the right where we were when Reagan affirmed that government is not the answer, it is the problem.
Pretty much the Texas GOP has adopted the attitude that if you are left leaning, you need to just go ahead and bite the bullet and join the Democratic Party. At least then the left leaners will be true to themselves.
You might also be interested to know that Gov. and Mrs. Perry and now personally caring for another Navy SEAL wounded in battle. And that they have befriended Marcus Littrell and the SEAL they are caring for is a friend of Marcus’s. And no, I don’t think you will read anything about this in the news. Rick and Anita Perry do it because they have respect for our troops, not because it makes for a great photo-op.
