“WASHINGTON – After the flub heard around the world, President Barack Obama has taken the oath of office. Again. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the oath to Obama on Wednesday night at the White House — a rare do-over. The surprise moment came in response to Tuesday’s much-noticed stumble, when Roberts got the words of the oath a little off, which prompted Obama to do so, too.
Don’t worry, the White House says: Obama has still been president since noon on Inauguration Day.
Nevertheless, Obama and Roberts went through the drill again out of what White House counsel Greg Craig called “an abundance of caution.”
But something was missing…the Bible, but don’t worry, when you’re the messiah you can skip these things.
“The president said he did not have his Bible with him, but that the oath was binding anyway.”
Uh-huh. You wonder just how many other things will be “binding anyway”. At least the media is catching up as to who caused the flub.
“It happened when Obama interrupted Roberts midway through the opening line, in which the president repeats his name and solemnly swears.”
It’s going to be a fun four years eh?

1Nothing in the Constitution requires the Oath to be said using a Bible.

2Well, considering a bible WAS used for the first oath, which WAS binding, even though Roberts initially got a couple words switched around, anyone with their panties in a twist over this is just manufacturing controversy.

4Keep it up, guys. You cheered while Bush and his cronies in the White House and Congress trashed the United States for the better part of a decade. Whining about nonsense like this just emphasizes to sane people how far around the bend the wingnuts have gone. Please, continue with your little circle jerk. It’ll keep you out of the way while the grown-ups clean up your mess.

6Using a Bible to swear an oath isn’t even Biblical. During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus specifically said to just let yes and no mean what they say, anything more than that is superfluous at best and perhaps even misleading.
Whether Obama honestly intends to (and follows through on) the oath of office is what matters. If even Jesus Christ doesn’t approve of swearing on a Bible, why should this be important?

7Oh no! Why does Obama hate Jesus so much! We are doomed for the next 4 years. Four years of constant doom!

9Well, if one watches the video, Roberts hesitated and Obama clearly took that as a non-verbal cue to repeat a script that Roberts should’ve been reading from, but instead decided to recall from memory.
It’ll be a very interesting four years, especially with people knit-picking human responses like this. Perhaps in the future we can have programmed robots to lead us. … and one to read it the oath of office.

10Is this the beginning of the first three and a half years?

11So what if there was no bible? Bibles aren’t required for swearing in. They’re just a tradition. The bible is not in the Constitution.
Besides, look how many hands on bibles belonged to complete liars. Obviously the bible doesn’t mean much even to Christians.

12Wow, you got a link on the New York Times .. are you going lefty?? lol
I think the real conspiracy here is that Roberts did it all on purpose. Please get on that asap.
And what news source are you quoting, btw. This is the first I’ve heard the spin that Obama is responsible because he interrupted Roberts .. haha. The lack of a citation makes me think it’s Drudge or some such.

13We all have to remember Obama’s dedication of attending mass and listening to that radical’s views. So all of a sudden he runs for president and all association with him is cut off. Hmm I wonder why? And yes I am a grown up idiot

14Jeff, thanks for the info about Jesus. I was unaware that the Bible was written before His time on earth.

15can’t help but think that Roberts did this on purpose, after all obama voted against his appointment to the sc, if not on a conscience level, then it was certainly a subconscience play. freud would love to analyze this one, someone dig him up and see what he has to say – k?

16The Bible is not required for swearing in a new President. This is a tradition initiated by George Washington, as a Free Mason. In fact the language used by the Chief of Justice and the prepared answers from the new President is somehow similar to the one used in Free Masonery.

17I can see it now: a new right wing attack on President Obama. That he is indeed a closet Muslim, deliberately flubbing the first oath with a bible but did it right without. (Of course it was Obama and not our wonderful strict constructionist Chief Justice who flubbed it.)
Some months after this initial attack, additional ingredients will be added. One of which will be that no TV coverage was allowed in the second oath because Obama did it with the koran.
For full disclosure, I voted for our new President. So naturally I wish him luck and the right wing fun. The hope the Right Wingnuts can run with this and provide us with months if not years of entertainment. Heaven knows we need it in this dismal time left to us by W – their hero.

18S.K. Chan, I agree, otherwise it would be blasphemous in Islam right?
