To followup with the previous post. Here’s what Obama says about pork.

In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Obama said: “What we need to do is examine: What are the projects where we’re going to get the most bang for the buck? How are we going to make sure taxpayers are protected?

“You know, the days of just pork coming out of Congress as a strategy, those days are over.”

Just three years ago congress and President Bush placed into law a $286 billion transportation measure that contains a record 6,371 pet projects inserted by members of Congress from both parties. Much of the projects begun by that legislation are still being completed and the original cost have long since overran.

Obama compares his plan with that of Eisenhower’s Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956. At that time the cost was $25 billion for the construction of 41,000 miles to be completed in 20 years. Yet according to figures the total cost over that 20 year span nearly tripled, and some projects were abandoned completely under subsequent administrations.

Obama’s plan will cost much more than Eisenhower could ever conceive, and much more than this country can afford.
