“Hillary Rodham Clinton has decided to give up her Senate seat and accept the position of secretary of state, making her the public face around the world for the administration of the man who beat her for the Democratic presidential nomination, two confidants said Friday.
The New TeamMrs. Clinton came to her decision after additional discussion with President-elect Barack Obama about the nature of her role and his plans for foreign policy, said one of the confidants, who insisted on anonymity to discuss the situation. Mr. Obama’s office told reporters Thursday that the nomination is “on track” but Clinton associates only confirmed Friday afternoon that she has decided.
“She’s ready,” said the confidant. Mrs. Clinton was reassured after talking again with Mr. Obama because their first meeting in Chicago last week “was so general,” the confidant said. The purpose of the follow-up talk, he added, was not to extract particular concessions but “just getting comfortable” with the idea of working together.
A second Clinton associate confirmed that her camp believes they have a done deal. Senior Obama advisers said Friday morning that the offer had not been formally accepted and no announcement will be made until after Thanksgiving. But they said they were convinced that the nascent alliance was now ready to be sealed.
Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman, Philippe Reines, issued a statement Friday afternoon cautioning that the nomination is not final. “We’re still in discussions, which are very much on track,” he said. “Any reports beyond that are premature.”
So the question is what does this do to Obama’s foreign policy plans. Hillary is a hawk, having voted for the war in Iraq and never really pulling back – although criticizing it. No doubt Obama’s motivation is keeping with the rule “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”, and is geared toward keeping her off the ticket in 2012. After all Barry is planning two terms.
Yet the bigger question is how does the uber antiwar left take it?

1Again, this is the man who told us that it was time to end the Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton dynasty. Yet, we are we getting? Clintonist retreads who will have mixed loyalties, I’m sure. But you are correct, keep your enemies closer. But according to Jake Tapper, there are some problems to be worked out, like Bill Clinton’s reluctance to have to submit his speeches (given to those who may not like us but are willing to fill the Clinton coffers) for approval from the Obama administration.
So now, because of the vetting process, Obama has all the dirt on Bill. That stuffed in his Oval Office desk, along with a handy pre-written resignation form with Hillary’s name on it, and the threat of leaking the goods on what could be considered just slightly left of the law when it comes to Bubba’s financial endeavors, is all he needs to keep the “Lady Hawk” in line.
As to the uber antiwar left, they remain confident that Obama will come through for them and can control Hillary, and consequently Bubba.
Me thinks is Obama is of the opinion that Hillary will pull a Susan Mcdougle act for him, he is sorely mistaken, proving once again that not only is he an empty suit, he is an empty suit that lacks judgement.
Oooops, we already knew that didn’t we? Calling Rev. Wright, calling William Ayers, calling Father Pflager.

3There are some significant benefits to us for this.
1) Hillary makes a good Machiavelli as well as a Lady MacBeth. She will look into Putin’s eyes and see KGB. (She might sell him the rope to hang us, but she will have no leftist illusions about what he or the nut job dictator of Iran is.) She is utterly ruthless and there is a lot to be said for that in a Secretary Of State. She will also be plotting the replacement of BO, and will not want to inherit a wasted and weak America.
2) Hillary is a compulsive thief. Her greed exceeds her prudence, as was the case with her cattle futures deals. She is rather likely to get caught with her hand in a Han cookie jar.
3) Hillary and the host of old Clinton administration appointments isn’t Change That We Can Believe In. It is painfully obviously the same-old-same-old. When the economy is worse in 2010 and 2012 than it is now, BO’s Change mantra will go over like a lead balloon. Saying “Vote for me because I’m black” ain’t going to hack it with an economy that is continuously deteriorating. And when really nasty inflation replaces deflation sometime in 2009, the same-old-same-old won’t be very attractive.
Of course, I’d feel safer with John Bolton, but we ain’t gonna get someone like that. Would you rather have the Hillamonster or Madaline Albright? Posted by SK

I thought this was a rather interesting take on this appointment.
