Make no mistake, Bush’s nomination of Judge Michael Mukasey to lead the DOJ is a “convenience” pick. It’s to avoid a fight with Schumer and Leahy pure and simple.
Don’t misunderstand me, it’ not that Judge Mukasey isn’t a good pick, he’s just not the right pick. The judge sounds like an outstanding and qualified candidate. But not as qualified as Ted Olson. But there is also the sense of loyalty lost here. Schumer can stuff his “cronyism” remarks – he’s hired more than most.
Yet let’s not forget Ted Olson saved George Bush’s bacon by winning Gore v. Bush when Gore tried to steal the 2000 election. He deserved a lot more than a wink and nod, and hell of lot more than what is in essence “not worth it” pass.
Sure there would have been a fight, but it would have been a good fight and one which the Democrats would have lost.
There are times when you fight for what is right and Ted Olson was right for the job.

1I’m not defending Bush’s pick in the least. But maybe Olson didn’t want to through the crap he knew he’d go through with that FREAK SHOW…after watching those demon clowns last week with General ‘King David’ Petraeus.
