I don’t know why the draft - as in non-voluntary service to this nation - gets such a bad name among democrats, after all it has everything they clamour for. In fact when you go over history most of our drafts - including Vietnam - were begun by Democrats.
Nevertheless the lefties are pouncing on the new War Czar because he hinted at it’s likelihood down the road.
“I think it makes sense to certainly consider it,” Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”
“And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation’s security by one means or another,” said Lute, who is sometimes referred to as the “Iraq war czar.” It was his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.
President Nixon abolished the draft in 1973. Restoring it, Lute said, would be a “major policy shift” and Bush has made it clear that he doesn’t think it’s necessary.
“The president’s position is that the all-volunteer military meets the needs of the country and there is no discussion of a draft. Gen. Lute made that point as well,” National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.”
That has the John (I can’t recall 264 times) Podesta site “Think Progress” crying foul as well as a few others. Yet let’s not forget that the champion of bringing back the draft is one of their own, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), who brough not one, but two bills to the floor (one in 2003, and the other this year) to bring back the draft.
Charlie had said when he reintroduced the idea of a draft:
“There’s no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm’s way,”
Now that was the first time I had ever heard of a draft being a war deterrent, but nevetheless, a draft would be a great idea, and Democrats should love the idea.
If you listen to their rhetoric about the woes that the young people of America face, then a draft is exacty what they’ve been yacking about for years!
Democrats are always talking about how “lost” our young people are under George Bush. Well, a draft would fix that! Put them under the tutelage of a kind and understanding - but firm - Drill Sergeant and I promise they’ll be lost no more.
Hillary Clinton is always talking about the lack of good healthcare for young americans. Well in the Military they’ll have access to the greatest healthcare system in the world. Best of all it’s free!
Additionally, Democrats have always supported federal aid for education. Well, that GI bill is spiffy and with bonus reinlistments you can get up to $40,000 buckaroos for that sheepskin - what’s not to like?
Moreover with gun possession growing among our young people, well hell, if their going to handle the damn things at least we can show they how they are supposed to be used.
So if you are a democrat you should rejoice at the prospect of a draft. There is no more perfect socialist environment than the military, and you even get to wear the same uniforms as your comrades.
Democrats should LOVE the idea of a draft - it’s so them!

1I have made the draft my personal punching bag.
Most especially, the bill put forward by Rep. Rangel in the 108th session, HR163, the `Universal National Service Act of 2003′. In the same session, then Senator Hollings had a “mirror” bill in the Senate, S89.
After reading stories about a new “draft” bill, I went to thomas.loc.gov and read the bill. It became obvious that Rep. Rangel had never read the bill, as in four different places where the word “reserve” appeared in S89, the word “reverse” (as in backwards) appeared in HR163, bringing to mind he meant it for retreats and such.
Keep in mind that HR163, with the “reverse”, actually came to the floor of the House and was voted on with this obvious mistake included.
The thought that has always been with me, was the “reserve” vs “reverse” mistake included on purpose, to make sure if both HR163 and S89 had passed that there would still have been no draft ?
