Oh, yeah, now that Dems are participating it’s “Eavedropping“.
“Under pressure from President Bush, Democratic leaders in Congress are scrambling to pass legislation this week to expand the government‚Äôs electronic wiretapping powers.
Democratic leaders have expressed a new willingness to work with the White House to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to make it easier for the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on some purely foreign telephone calls and e-mail. Such a step now requires court approval.
It would be the first change in the law since the Bush administration’s program of wiretapping without warrants became public in December 2005.
In the past few days, Mr. Bush and Mike McConnell, director of national intelligence, have publicly called on Congress to make the change before its August recess, which could begin this weekend. Democrats appear to be worried that if they block such legislation, the White House will depict them as being weak on terrorism.
‚ÄúWe hope our Republican counterparts will work together with us to fix the problem, rather than try again to gain partisan political advantage at the expense of our national security,‚Äù Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, said in a statement Monday night.”
Unbelievable. Dirty Harry has the balls to talk about “partisan political advantage” when it’s from his side that most of the leaking of national security secrets have come, all for partisan political advantage. In fact they haven’t done anything in the last six years but play partisen politics.
Utterly amazing. Fact is that they wouldn’t be “scrambling” for anything if it weren’t for the recent reporting that showed their forcing the NSA to pull back it’s activities out of fear of retribution by congress. So then the only reason they want to appear to be protecting this country is for “partisen political purposes”.
Nevertheless, the WAPO continues to run drip stories giving away even more secrets and so it goes.
Again to the democrats and the media, the next 9/11 is on you!

1Stuff like this sounds really warm and fuzzy, meanwhile back at the ranch, somebody is speaking with forked-tongue ..
House Democrats canceled Tuesday’s planned hearing with Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell, prompting a rebuke from Republicans who want Congress to proceed quickly on updating a key surveillance law.
So is somebody going to tell me that they just don’t need to hearing the DNI or is it that they just don’t like the letter that the DNI sent to Arlen Specter.
My BS-meter is pegged.

2Wait, I’m confused… why would the NSA require a court order to eavesdrop on foreign phone calls and e-mail? The NSA is a military organization and their “eavesdropping” activities outside the US should be outside the purview of the US courts, shouldn’t it?
Did the reporter in this article even get the main details right?

3The definition of “domestic call” and “foreign call” need a bit of adjusting.
Currently, there are some FISA judges that consider any call that is routed through the US to be a “domestic” phone call, even if it is between two al Qeada members in the UK and Indonesia. So long as it passes through phone equipment in territorial USA, they consider it “domestic” and under the supervision of FISA.
Additionally, is a call that has one end “foreign” and the other end “domestic”, a “foreign call” or a “domestic call” ? This has been the main point of contention with the alleged “domestic eavesdropping” program within the NSA.
