Getting used to seeing this:
“White House efforts to keep congressional Republicans united over the Iraq war suffered another major defection yesterday as Sen. Pete V. Domenici (N.M.) broke with President Bush and called for an immediate change in U.S. strategy that could end combat operations by spring.
The six-term lawmaker, party loyalist and former staunch war supporter represents one of the most significant GOP losses to date. Speaking to reporters at a news conference in Albuquerque, Domenici said he began to question his stance on Iraq late last month, after several conversations with the family members of dead soldiers from his home state, and as it became clear that Iraqi leaders are making little progress toward national reconciliation.
“We cannot continue asking our troops to sacrifice indefinitely while the Iraqi government is not making measurable progress,” Domenici said. “I do not support an immediate withdrawal from Iraq or a reduction in funding for our troops. But I do support a new strategy that will move our troops out of combat operations and on the path to coming home.”
First Domenici has NEVER been a “stanch defender” of the war, and has wavered from time time.¬† This “stance”¬† along with that of other RINOs such as Lugar, Warner and (Cry me a River) Voinovich, and (I smells the rain, see the helecopters) Hagel, this is far from a mass defection and so NOT suprising.
Still what this dolt and the rest of the dolts are in essence doing is telling General Patreaus that they have absolutely no confidence in his ability (even though the surge is so far a hugh success), and showing their real distain for the troops. ¬† It’s always the case that when the going is trough the wussies pull up their tents.
If you so choose give him a call and tell him just how his non-support of active troops in the field makes you feel.

1You’re probably right, but remember they’re politicians with clearances who’ve been briefed on where Gates wants to be – he even told us as much a week or so ago. They’re just trying to get credit for pushing Bush/Gates to the position they’re already headed towards. If reports from the field are correct the Petraeous counterinsurgency squeeze is rapidly calming things down as Iraqis stand up and reject AQ and militia extremism. It’s too bad Domenici is revealing himself to be so lacking in political courage and statesmanship but sadly all too typical.

2You are so correct.
On the very eve that Bush was to announce his plans for the surge operation six months ago, Dominici said this:
“We should throw ‘surge’ out the window.”

I just don’t understand why those opposed to the troop surge are coming out to call it a failure two weeks into it. Why can’t they wait for Gen Patraeus to give his report in September?

3They have always been here, but I’m getting so sick of politicians that determine their beliefs by sticking their finger in the air and feeling for which way the wind is blowing. This is just one of the latest examples. Lindsay Graham is a wonderful example of this policy. Hopefully after the next election, a former senator.

4[...] The number of moderate GOP senators not willing to wait for the September report on Iraq and calling for surrender is growing by the day. And lobbing insults at them is not going to make this any better or convince them to change their minds. In fact, it just makes it worse. The addition of Senators Gregg and Alexander to Domenici who came out early this week brings the number of moderates defecting up to nearly ten. Not veto proof but getting their way too fast. If the hotheads cannot talk respectfully and maturely I suggest they sit down and shut up. [...]

5Nevermore,
We will simply find a way to remove them from office. We need a “cleansing” and a “washing” of the party and it’s about time to begin.
