Bill Kristol tips us to the fact that there are forces within the White House trying to get the President to compromise on Iraq and commit to a cut and run.

“The New York Times leads today with David Sanger’s story, “In White House, Debate Is Rising On Iraq Pullback; Political Considerations; Not Waiting For Sept. 15, Aides Seek to Forestall G.O.P. Defections.” The piece is tendentious, as one would expect–but THE WEEKLY STANDARD has confirmed that there are real discussions going on at the White House, with advocates of what is being called “The Grand Bargain” pushing hard for the president to move soon to announce plans to pull back in Iraq. So this week will not only be a week of (mostly silly) debate on the Hill; it will also be an important moment of truth for the president, who will have to decide whether to give Gen. Petraeus and the soldiers a chance, or to accept the counsel of some of his advisers and begin to throw in the towel on Iraq.”

So just who are these “Grand Bargin”? Bill didn’t want to identify them, but I will, they are some of the same compromisers we have witnessed in recent history, so called “calamity-Janes” – particulary RINOS who want the President to kowtow to the left in order to look good at the polls?

I don’t believe he will, but then again, I will also warn him that he better not. President Bush can ill afford any further errosion of the base by compromising where he has never faltered. Again, I can’t see him doing it. You see contrary to most of our elected leaders, Bush believes in this cause. Say what you will, but he has been resolute when other namby-pamby Rebublicans would have headed for the gates and gave up.

But that hasn’t stopped the Hagels, Domenicis, Lugars and the rest of the Newly Hatched “Cut and Run RINOS”, from stomping their way to the microphones to undercut General Patraeus and the troops.

Hugh Hewitt makes this point that the any further deviation from the wishes of the base will cause serious carnage among Republicans who want give in to the demands of Harry Reid and the Ny Times. Their time is limited and as I said the “cleansing has begun”.
