There are signs that the Immigration (A) Bill is beginning to wane. According to Rasmussen Reports:
“Public support for the Senate immigration reform bill has slipped a bit over the past week. A Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Monday and Tuesday night found that just 23% of voters now support the bill while 50% are opposed. Last week, 26% supported the Senate bill while 48% were opposed.
In the face of public opposition, some supporters of the legislation have argued that the compromise may not be perfect but doing something is better than doing nothing. Voters have a different view–a solid plurality believes it would be better for the country to pass no bill at this time rather than letting the Senate compromise become law.
Forty-nine percent (49%) of voters prefer no bill over the Senate bill. Just 32% prefer the legislative compromise over inaction.”
Meanwhile it appears that Senator Reid is going to try to push a vote for closure which would surely kill it.

1I think my efforts this fall would be better spent teaching my nephew to throw a slurve than to do much on the elections front.

2as with so much in washington voter support is a very small part of the decision. however if the press were pointing out the loopholes and the dems were against these loopholes then and only then would public opinion be rallied. as it is now the repubs, famous for being ham fisted, are continuing their seminal pursuit of incompetence in regards to leadership.
this bill is so easily remedied if someone, anyone, with a speaking voice would simply step forward and deliver a simple speech. Where is that person in the republican congress? 72% of the american public want the border secured. we can’t even get that accomplished. we have become pathetic when we can’t even agree to our own sovereignty.

3The Cornyn Amendment defeat exposes the bill for what it is, blanket amnesty that leaves the border open and further deteriorates our infrastructure. It’s easy to say, we’ll build a fence, more border partol officers, etc., etc., yada, yada. That’s what they told us last year. Results: What, 3 miles of fence?
It’s not leadership to support a flawed bill, just to have a bill. Again, that’s what happened last year. They’re not fooling anyone this time. Ed Meese on Laura Ingraham’s program this morning, asked to state the difference between Reagan’s amnesty bill and this one, replied, “Well we were honest enough to admit it was amnesty.” Back then it was only 3 million people. Meese said it only took 6 months before it was clear the US had no intention of enforcing the border.
Look at the list of those who voted against preventing gang members and felons from being legalized (Cornyn Ammendment). The list is at Michelle Malkin’s site. There’s your leadership defecit. And folks, as Patrick above points out, it was the same “Oh well, we need workers,” kind of thinking that made Europe what it is today.
I’ll be active this election year. Searching for some real Americans to run for Congress. Too bad we can’t find anyone to start early by putting up recall petitions on the web. Both sides of the divide have stopped serving the public.
