Voters of Pennsylvania need to recall Senator Arlen Specter now.
“A bill that would allow terrorism suspects access to federal courts to challenge their imprisonment at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.
The committee, on an 11-8 vote, advanced a bill that would allow prisoners to protest their detentions by the Bush administration. All of the committee’s Democrats and Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, the committee’s top Republican, voted for the legislation. The rest of the GOP senators voted against it.
Congress, while under GOP control last year, stripped federal courts of jurisdiction over Guantanamo cases. As a result, detainees only had recourse to challenge their imprisonment through special military tribunals that omitted rights common in civil courts.
Administration officials and most Republicans say they do not think dangerous terror suspects should have access to federal courts or other rights granted to U.S. citizens under the Constitution.
But Democrats and Specter say a person’s right to file a special legal petition to protest detention, known as a writ of habeas corpus, is considered a fundamental right in civilized society. Eliminating that right would undermine the nation’s reputation abroad, they said.
The bill passed without debate.”
The bill is S. 185 and you need to contact your senators NOW and tell them that a vote “Yea” on a bill with this provision will be considered the end of their political career.¬† If it passes it will only by a few votes so let your voice be heard.
Terrorist have NO constitutional right to habias corpus or any other right of a CITIZEN of the US. ¬† It’s time for the madness to stop, and if we band together we will stop it.

1The good news – this will draw a veto.
The bad news – the GOP coalition is asunder, so the successor just may be someone who signs some piece of junk like this.

3I hope this comment does not come up twice as I seemed unable to post earlier.
I will write an abbreviated version and ask only Corn that you not paint all Pennsylvanian’s with a broad brush.
We certainly do not have any desire to have terrorists in our midst nor can we each answer individually for the actions of our Senators and Congressmen.
Furthermore, following your logic every state which has a Democrat as a Senator or Congressman would have to feel exactly the same.
Do I have any respect for Arlen Specter, no and have not for years but I will not be held responsible for his actions either. I have said it before, the man does not respond to letters or phone calls and if you send an email you get a pat response.
My guess..next election Pa will have two democrats seated in the Senate..not much of a change I suggest.

4So we move these guys out of Gitmo into our prisons and we get Islamofascist blowing them up in our cities. Can the Dems think past the last sound bite?

5No, Kathie, they can’t think past a sound bite. They’ll also be the first to blame Bush, or some other republican, when a court lets out a terrorist who decides to blow himself up in the middle of a mall in Kansas City.

Of course I don’t blame all Pennsylvanians. Just terribly frustrated that’s all…same as you I suspect. We here in bad old Illinois have our own “dynamic duo” in Obama and Durbin. Gives me the shivers to realize that they would be returned to office in a heartbeat by voters here and one of them is running for President! Yikes!! I did not help to put them there and have nothing but contempt for both of them.
The last 6 years are taking their toll on my wits (as I am at the END of them). Hey, I know the feeling of not getting those in Washington to listen, because I have sent untold messages, letters, emails, and made phone calls…and all for nothing.
So, sorry, nothing personal intended at all. I just don’t know what we are going to do…any of us. You?

7I feel the same frustration, and yes, it’s lasted through six years of weak, silly measures to deal with domestic problems, and outright subversion by Democrats on the war on terror.
I endorse Mac’s headline. It’s a way to send these people a message: We’ve had enough of your insanity.
Wouldn’t take much to get a recall petitionh started. All you need would be one of the polls like you see on Newsmax: “Yes or No, should Hillery become President?”
Just make it “Should the voters of PA recall Arlen Spector?” Would be interesting to see what happens. Would make for some real uncomfortable moments for Arlen. Maybe even calm him down some.
The technique is, of course, transferrable. Say, while we’re on the subject of PA, to that wonderful little “earmark mecca” Johnstown. Then, on to…
It would simply become a string of pre-Primary surveys that may help fearful potential candidates discover weakness in districts thought to be “safe.” No kidding, it could be a way to help out new leaders who may want to try running but think they have no chance. I believe most people in most districts are as frustrated as we are, Dem or Rep. The system has just become so locked up they have no outlet for their frustration until election time. By then its same-o, same-o. With media focused on the presidential race, district contests stay below the radar and in the hands of political machines, until election night.
Well, I like to at least think of ways to unlock things. A recall petition would focus some voter attention to weak incumbents while another hopeful would have a chance to mount a campaign.
