K. Lopez at The Corner is keeping track on Senators yet to state whether or not they’ll vote for cloture. Yesterday Kay Baily Hutchinson – noted as a key vote – released a statement that she will vote “No” on closure.
Add to that now, Tennessee’s Lamar Alexander.
“From Lamar Alexander’s office:
“I will vote against cloture to end debate on the current immigration bill when it comes before us next week. Other than the war on terror, there is nothing more important than fixing our broken immigration system, and we must keep working on it for as long as it takes to get it right, but right must include a process that earns the confidence of the American people, and this bill does not do that.
This problem has been years in the making and will take time to fix. We must secure the border first once and for all, verified by credible sources, without amnesty – you are here legally or you are not here. We also must make it easier for highly skilled workers to come to America to create jobs and expect and assist those here legally to become Americans by speaking our language and appreciating our history and culture.
I will oppose any bill that does not include these essential elements.”
They’re hearing from the voters wo are against this bill – loud and clear. Note he says what I’ve been saying for weeks. Yes the immigration system is broken, has been for forty years since Ted Kennedy last put his two inebriated cents in. But this is NOT the bill proponents think it is. You have to READ the thing and then you’ll see that it’s not what you think it is. It’s a disaster in the making which will not only weaken the border security we barely have, but create a welfare state that even FDR couldn’t have dreamed of.
Don’t take my word for it – READ it for yourself and then – and only then – can you make an intelligent assessment of it’s contents.

1Mac, I don’t know one American who is against immigration. But that is not how it is being spun. The spin, by the pro-illegal crowd pushed by groups like LaRaza, LULAC and the rest, is that any American who is against this bill is a “racist” and a “bigot”. Lindsey Graham even went so far as to tell the LaRaza group that he was going to tell the “bigots” to shut up. He seems to forget that it was those “bigots” that voted that Graham-cracker into office. Now there are movements to quickly find a replacement for him in the next primary.
Here is how I see it: those select few, who think they know what is better for this nation than everyday Americans do, met in the backrooms of the Senate, with input from special interest groups, and thought they could shove a bill over on the disinterested and uninformed American voter. What they have learned is that in the day of the internet and immidiate sources, the American voter is not as uninformed or disinterested as Kennedy and Gang thought they were and Americans could see the travesty as they read the bill. They could also see that no where in the bill did it do what our government is supposed to do; act in the best interest of Americans and those trying to become Americans, not foreign nationals whose loyalities remain with their native lands. There is NO benefit in this bill for Americans. It is all about benefits for those who came here illegally while it slaps the face of those honest and productive LEGAL immigrants whose only desire was to be an American citizen and to contribute, not drain, from the society they were asking to accept them. And accept them we do when they show honor and respect for our laws, our citizens and our nation.
The Texas Employers For Immigration Reform are currently running ads in Texas touting the value of this bill. But one look at TEIR’s membership list (on their website) shows who is behind legalizing 12-20 million underpaid illegals; Tyson Poultry, Pilgrim’s Pride Farms, Sanderson’s Farms (all poulty farms and processing plants), lawn services, Texas Restraurant Association, hotel associations and Hispanic associations. All benefit from illegal immigration making their profit margin even higher while lowering the wage of jobs that could be taken by undereducated Americans.
And what the Senate forgot is that Americans realize that what the Senate gives, the Senate can take away. Prime example is the Fence Act of 2006. That fence has now been reduced by half in the new Senate bill.
Immigration reform should not be about those who entered illegally. It should be about those who play by the rules, waiting patiently in their native lands and know that doing so will give them a chance at what they consider the “golden ring”. These are the immigrants we should be considering, not those who, with their first act, break our laws and disrespect our citizens.

I live in southeast Texas, and through the years I’ve watched the border come to me.
I don’t think most people that live outside of the border states have even heard of the “Reconquista” movement, and if they have they don’t believe it is anything more than a small group of nuts.

3I suspect Kay Bailey Hutchison read the writing on the wall. Her office was flooded with phone calls, emails, faxes, telling her a yes vote on cloture was a no vote for her. I didn’t think she would fold though, since rumors have it she isn’t going to seek another term. Good for her, though. I’m glad she listened to the voices of her constituents.
