Wizbang’s politics section has a piece of news on the immigration debate.¬† This non-event is big.
The short version: Lindsey Graham will not be facing a primary challenger.  This is not a small thing.  Graham has been one of the most outspoken critics of some opponents of the comprehensive bill, and has been willing to return fire at some them.
Much like the 2006 primary victory of Congressman Chris Cannon, this has to be a sign that the opposition is loud, but not as widespread as we’re supposed to believe.¬† OK, many major conservative sites and bloggers – not to mention major talk show hosts – oppose this bill vehemently, but at the same time… why is there no primary challenger for Senator Graham?¬† Why did Randy Graf get a lower percentage than Cannon’s challenger and need to rely on the fact that two moderates were running to secure his primary victory?
Think that over… and then let’s decide if pushing forward is really going to be a disaster.

1Actually, Ravenel was indicted yesterday on cocaine charges. He was South Carolina state chairman of Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign until he resigned today.

2I noticed that. But Ravenel had also long expressed a disinclination to challenge Graham.
The fact that Graham’s not drawing a credible challenger says a lot, IMO.

3While Graham is up for re-election next year, I am reading some sites like “Dump Lindsey Graham” that are trying to rally the masses to find someone to run against Graham. There is still time. It all depends on just how fed up with Graham the citizens are.
Graham thinks he is secure in his seat. That may be his downfall. If someone, with the proper background and known name, jumps in the race in the next six months, Graham may have his hands full.
Don’t believe me? History shows us differently. No one believed George W. Bush could defeat Ann Richards, including his own mother, Barbara. Ooops.

5It does not matter whether Graham has a Republican opponent. He is toast in SC. He doesn’t even bother to reply to letters challenging his pro illegal amnesty position. Aparently he thinks that having won one election he is guaranteed to be reelected for life as most SC Senators have been in the past. But the poeple in SC do not like to be betrayed. They are notorious for voting against anyone who treats them the way Graham has. The sorry fact is by getting his no. one opponent busted (and it is not unheard of for drugs to be planted on someone in SC) he just may be setting SC up to get another Fritz Hollings Democrat elected for life. I for one cannot vote for him, even if I hold my nose. And I am a staunch Republican who has never voted for a Democrat. The only way the Democrats can lose the election is to nominate someone worse than Graham. And it will take a lot of dirty dealings to get any worse than Lindsay. I certainly hope we find someone to take him on. He needs to realize he is up there to represent the people of SC and not Mexico.
