Again, not good news for the immigration bill from the people.
“Americans give both President Bush and the Congress failing marks on their handling of immigration, according to a new UPI/Zogby poll on the topic.
The Zogby Interactive poll of 8,300 adults nationwide finds just 3% of Americans viewing Congress’s handling of the immigration issue in favorable terms, while 9% say the same of the President-even as respondents in the survey rated it the second most important issue facing the country, after the war in Iraq.
As the U.S. Senate prepares to vote on an immigration reform bill tomorrow in Washington, Americans said they take a dim view of that bill, with just 38% holding a favorable view of the legislation. The poll also suggests that those most favorably-disposed toward the bill are those who view guest worker programs and a pathway to citizenship for those now in the country illegally as the most important aspects of the immigration debate.”
This poll is distinct as it addresss the two key issues, border security and amnesty and guest worker programs. Again, the people are more for the former and decidedly against the latter.
“Nearly two in three Americans (64%) would prefer their Congressional representative worked to pass immigration reforms that were more restrictive, while just one in four (26%) would back making the U.S.’s borders more open.
Despite this, increasing border security ranks a distant second for Americans as a top immigration-related issue, with enforcing existing immigration laws among those already living in the U.S. the top issue for a 42% plurality.”
So how do people feel about the “poor” the “down-trodden”?
“Illegal immigrants who live and work within the U.S. are seen as a burden by a 46% plurality of Americans. Fewer than half as many - 22% - see them as a benefit.”
The suvey does go on to show that only 37 percent favor deportation (a growing number from previous polls), but still a low number.
In any case this simply shows the point that as more people actually digest the prospects of the bill they are spewing it out. If this bill passes it will be totally against the will of the American people.

Libby’s Appeal Panel
Clarice Feldman
Yesterday it was reported that the panel which will hear Libby’s application for bond pending appeal is composed of Judges Sentelle, Tatel and Rogers, the same judges who heard (and denied) Judith Miller’s appeal of the order compelling her to respond to the subpoena issued by Fitzgerald.
The New York Sun is skeptical that this panel will grant Libby’s petition.
Judge Sentelle was appointed to the appeals court by President Reagan, Judge Tatel by President Clinton, and Judge Henderson by President George H.W. Bush.
Mr. Banks said the political impact of the case is likely to be less of factor than the court’s unreceptive attitude to most appeals by criminal defendants. The judges “tend to be very deferential especially in criminal matters, unless there’s an egregious error,” the professor said.
“I think big ‚ÄòP’ politics will come out in the wash, and it will turn on jurisprudential views,” a lawyer who practices regularly before the court, Erik Jaffe, said. He said all the judges are reluctant to overturn the rulings of district court judges, such as Judge Reggie Walton, who has denied Libby a stay of his sentence.
