As I posted previously, the apparent death of the immigration bill is welcome. Again, read the thing and no matter what side your on, it’s bad – Kennedy bad.
Now that it’s off the table perhaps people could actually take time to read this convuted mess and after wiping the forehead thank God it self-destructed.
Again, not that we don’t need some reform, but this bill added more problems than it fixed. It wasn’t just the uber right that was finding issues with this mess, but the uber left and many more in between. Yet what really killed it was that it’s proponents were trying to essentially circumvent the legislative process and effectual tell people “trust us”. Fine. But after reading it some of us had questions and when we asked for clarification we were again told, “calm down and trust us”. Not an answer and not the way good bills are passed.
I told everyone from the beginning that this bill deserved an honest debate and the time to pass it. Proponents didn’t want either. They wanted to kill debate and effectually force the issue. It’s for that reason alone that this bill lies dead for now, and again, that is a good thing. We all need to step back and reassess this – but at a later date. But like I said previously I believe a better bill will rise from the ashes.
As think the aforementioned Big Lizards words are correct to quote at this point.
“So let us take great advantage of the breathing space that the (even more tone deaf than George Bush and Hugh Hewitt) majority leader gave us. Let’s all just take a deep breath, calm down, forget about the immigration bill for a while… and can’t we all just get along?”
