Hate to borrow from Tom McGuire, but this called for it.
“An unclassified summary of outed CIA officer Valerie Plame’s employment history at the spy agency, disclosed for the first time today in a court filing by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, indicates that Plame was “covert” when her name became public in July 2003.
The summary is part of an attachment to Fitzgerald’s memorandum to the court supporting his recommendation that I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Vice President Cheney’s former top aide, spend 2-1/2 to 3 years in prison for obstructing the CIA leak investigation.
The nature of Plame’s CIA employment never came up in Libby’s perjury and obstruction of justice trial.
The unclassified summary of Plame’s employment with the CIA at the time that syndicated columnist Robert Novak published her name on July 14, 2003 says, “Ms. Wilson was a covert CIA employee for who the CIA was taking affirmative measures to conceal her intelligence relationship to the United States.”
Plame worked as an operations officer in the Directorate of Operations and was assigned to the Counterproliferation Division (CPD) in January 2002 at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.
The employment history indicates that while she was assigned to CPD, Plame, “engaged in temporary duty travel overseas on official business.” The report says, “she traveled at least seven times to more than ten times.” When overseas Plame traveled undercover, “sometimes in true name and sometimes in alias — but always using cover — whether official or non-official (NOC) — with no ostensible relationship to the CIA.”
After the Novak column was published and Plame’s identity was widely reported in the media, and according to the document, “the CIA lifted Ms Wilson’s cover” and then “rolled back her cover” effective to the date of the leak.
The CIA determined, “that the public interest in allowing the criminal prosecution to proceed outweighed the damage to national security that might reasonably be expected from the official disclosure of Ms. Wilson’s employment and cover status.”
The CIA has not divulged any other details of the nature of Plame’s cover or the methods employed by the CIA to protect her cover nor the details of her classified intelligence activities. Plame resigned from the CIA in December 2005.”
Excuse me? A “Grandfathered Status” of covert. Sorry, no “apples” here. First, the fact is that “if” she held covert status it would have been revealed and protected at the time when Novak notified CIA officials of the story. “Taking measures” my ass. Either she was or wasn’t and that’s what I’ve been saying from the beginning. When Novak called Bill Harlow and Harlow had to hang up and then call back, I told you that was BS. All he had to do was punch her name up in the computer on his desk and he could have told Novak straight out she was protected.
Fact is that she wasn’t. Harlow knew who she was as she had already been stripped of duties for her little scheme sending “honey bunch” to Niger (a rather embarrassing screw up I might add). What is a fact is that having been relieved of duties from CIO a full year prior – in 2002, by June of 2003 she was working in a non-covert status in Langley.
Fact is that Plame still is the key to the real story about her and her rogue buds were trying to pull off prior to the war. This story is simply another bow-shot to keep others off the trail, especially after her false testimony earlier this month.
Oh, and this is choice drivel:
“The employment history indicates that while she was assigned to CPD, Plame, “engaged in temporary duty travel overseas on official business.” The report says, “she traveled at least seven times to more than ten times.” When overseas Plame traveled undercover, “sometimes in true name and sometimes in alias — but always using cover — whether official or non-official (NOC) — with no ostensible relationship to the CIA.”
What you see her is a complete broadside fabrication from the rogues and nothing more. It might fool the fools of the MSM, but for those who were there and known, it’s crap pure and simple. Fitzgerald is showing more and more the partisan that he is, a poltical hack of the first order. Fact is that if this document had any authenticity to it Fitzgerald could have charged Libby under IIPA. It didn’t and he knew it.
Byron York wrote today:
“During the CIA-leak probe, Fitzgerald looked into possible violations of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act and the Espionage Act. He did not charge anyone with breaking either law. But in his court filing, Fitzgerald writes that the grand jury ‚Äúobtained substantial evidence indicating that one or both of the‚Ķstatutes may have been violated.‚Äù Therefore, Fitzgerald is asking Judge Reggie Walton to treat Libby as if it had been proven that such crimes occurred. ‚ÄúBecause the investigation defendant was convicted of endeavoring to obstruct focused on violations of the IIPA and the Espionage Act,‚Äù Fitzgerald continues, ‚Äúthe court much calculate defendant‚Äôs offense level by reference to the guidelines applicable to such violations.‚Äù
If in fact the documents now produced had any such validity it would have been basically a cake walk to pin a violation of the IIPA on Libby. Hell, with that DC jury they pinned heresay on him, why not? It tells you a lot that there wasn’t any such veracity placed on the documents which translated means the fact that the were written up after the fact didn’t pass the smell test.
Relegate this to yet another fabrication in the Plame Game.
UPDATE: Capt Ed (heh):
“So now we have confirmation that Plame did get her cover blown. I suppose the only reason that Fitzgerald didn’t bother to indict Richard Armitage for the crime was that it would have meant explaining how the CIA tried to hide its NOC asset in plain sight.”
Yeah…
UPDATE: Tom McGuire does weigh in and correctly notes that the document posted by MSNBC is an ‘opinion‘ by Fitzgerald and not a statement of fact of Plame’s status.
Secondly, the agency “clarification” (a whole three pages of confusion) clarifies nothing except that often thrown out leftist mantra, “She worked at the CIA and everyone is covert at the CIA because they work at the CIA”. On that definition a janitor cleaning the toilet at Langley would be covert.
Sorry, no dice. Again the inescapable fact is that since Libby wasn’t convicted on a charge of outing a CIA covert operative under IIPA, it was because – solely – that Plame did NOT meet the criteria.
Again it is hilarious to see this tripe resurface via the MSM when 36 news organizations in fact filed an Brief in 2005 that stated in fact no crime had been commited thus she wasn’t covert.
I’ll have more on this later…

3The New, Improved Plame Game…
MSNBC is reporting Valerie Plame really was covert when Robert Novack published her name.
We now know that because Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has an attachment to his memorandum to the court supporting his recommendation that I. Lewis “Scooter…

4Mac: you say that Valerie was relieved of her duties, a year prior, for her role in sending her husband to Niger?
Where do you come by that info, if I may ask?
I’m not doubting it, but I haven’t heard nor read it somewhere else?
If you have sources who tell you this stuff, and you do allude to that from time to time, why do they sit by, and allow all these miscarriages of justice to take place?
You allude time to time, of sources like these, on the Leak investigations at Justice, etc., and promise this stuff is going to be exposed, and yet, the only ones who ever “win”, are the freaking Anti-American Media, and the Leftist enemies of the President; and I’m DAMN tired of it!
If you have these sources, where are they, when are they going to act, to stop this illegal, seditionist, bullshit?
Makes me crazy!
I’m a fan Mac, I’m not calling you out; I just want to KNOW, when is this stuff that is destroying our President, providing aid to the Jihadis, stabbing our troops in the back, and undermining our military and the GWOT and the Iraq & Afghani efforts, going to stop!
This is treason, and I’m pissed, and I’m tired of seeing these bastard Leftists in the Congress and media not only undermine the troops and the war effort against a very real, and dangerous enemy that wants to cut our heads off, but they are also, frankly, destroying the power of the Presidency for future President’s ability to wage war!
That’s a fact!
I’m tired of it, I’m pissed, and I want this damn Administration to stop letting these bastards get away with it!
So, IF your sources know this stuff, it’s time for them to step, and tell the world!
As for Valerie Plame, that’s an interesting comment, that she was relieved of her duties/cover, because of sending her husband to Niger.
Intereting because, she should’ve never been under “cover” to begin with; her identity was leaked by Aldrich Ames, back in the early 90′s, to the KGB, who in turn, leaked it to Cuban Intel; that’s why she was brought back from overseas in 1997, and never made a “NOC” again!
Additionally, she was instrumental in sending her husband to Niger, on TWO other occasions, in 1999, and possibly in 2001 as well!
How does that jibe with what you are saying?
I’d appreciate your answers, and thank you!

5Hi Dale,
It has been published in many places that Plame was given an unpaid leave of absence back around 2002. See this link for more.

I just filled in the blanks. The actual reason was in “nepotism” which incidently was the reason Novak was writing about the story.
The fact is that without the MSM (the CIA’s propaganda wing), you won’t see much happen to her UNLESS MSM focus were to shape her in the light we all know her to be.
The fact is that Plame and others she worked with were rifted out of the agency after Goss entered in.
Don’t let the “full court press” of the left get you down. They took a full shot at the President and VP and got Libby instead.
Fact is that this story is really so much ho-hum and so-what. Again, if it had been all that important or real it would have hit the airwaves before now.
This is more geared towards her civil suit against Cheney which will get tossed from court.

6Don’t forget that Plame went on maternity leave. Plame supposedly had post-partum syndrome so went on another leave of absense.
Can Department of Justice do anything to Plame? I don’t think so. Our Democrats will be all over DoJ for going after Plame.
I wonder what Walton will end up doing now that Fitz introduced it in his sentencing documents. Will the Defense Team now be allowed to rebut those things during the sentencing period? Since Fitz asked for 30 to 37 months, was he looking to allow Libby a very moderate sentence or nothing at all?
Anyone know if Bates has ruled on the Wilson civil case?
