I agree with Harold that we need to look at the polling data from 2004, 2006 and play close attention, especially on reaching an acceptable middle ground, but I doubt McCain is that tuned in to what the GOP needs. Fact is McCain was in fact one of the reasons we tanked in 2006. “A house divided”
Not to mention that his “hoof-in-mouth” disease seems terminal. To wit:
“Sen. John McCain used a blogger conference call today to unleash his toughest — and most personal — attack yet on former Gov. Mitt Romney.
Per a McCain aide, one of the bloggers asked about the immigration issue and Romney’s attack on the compromise.
“Maybe I should wait a couple of weeks and see if it changes because its changed in less than a year from his position before,” McCain responded, referring to his rival’s immigration stance. “And maybe his solution will be to get out his small varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his lawn.”
McCain’s reference to “Guatemalans” was an allusion to the Boston Globe story from late last year that reported Romney used illegal immigrants from that country to do work on his lawn.”
I doubt McCain is interested in the fortunes of the GOP, as much as he’s just trying to get elected. Fact is that he’s has a case of the ass ever since GW wooped it in 2000, and he has NEVER gotten over it.
McCain is a loaded gun and a man without core. If he was so concerned about the GOP he should have thought about that before he tried his “Gang of 13″ stunt which did nothing but empower mintority democrats on judicial nominees.

1FED IS THE PERSON WE NEED. He speaks softly and every word is profound. You say to your self, I hardly noticed…….boy is that ever TRUE. This is what we need now, not the screeching of Hillary, the know nothing of Obama, or the pounding of McCain. FRED KNOWS THAT HE IS THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE TIME. He will get into the race and will win. I was a Mitt person, but I’m thinking he is not the right guy for now.

2I agree with you about McCain. All I am saying is that he is correct about immigration – and that the polling data seem to bear out the concerns he expressed in the conference call.
The position of the Republican base on illegal immigration is untenable, based both on the primary elections in Utah’s 3rd Congressional District and in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District and the exit polling data from 2006.
A number of Senators are trying to use the power that the Senate minority has to broker an honorable compromise that will admittedly be be imperfect. That is perfectly honorable in this situation, especially given what else is going on.
Quite frankly, John Hawkins’ threat of Google-bombing has actually increased my support for the compromise. He’s trying to blackmail the GOP into holding a position that is politically untenable. I don’t like people trying to blackmail me.

3Harold,
Again, I agree. Yet after reading a large part of the bill as it is, I am also in agreement with the “wait and debate” crowd. Lot’s of stuff that just isn’t doable, nor acceptable, and even a bit that is unbelievable.
As with Hawkins and the rest of the “bang ‘em” crowd, hey, it’s a free country, but I doubt “Goggle bombing” will have much effect.

By keeping them around we’re
