I have a very simple problem with the Speaker of the House engaging in foreign policy and “opening dialogs” with foreign powers. That is that she is nothing more than a representative from a very small segment of the American population. She represents a congressional district in California. She was not elected by the people of this country and has no authority to speak for them. We did not put her into office nor can we vote her out of office. The President, on the other hand, is a nationally elected office.
Mrs. Pelosi, you do not speak for me or even the majority of the population of California or even the Bay Area for that matter. You speak for one very small portion of it. Evidently one small piece of California has hijacked the foreign policy of the United States of America. If the Speaker is going to engage in Foreign Policy on behalf of the people of the United States, then the office should be answerable to the people of the United States. If the Speaker is to represent us to foreign powers then the office should be elected at large by the entire population of the United States.
What set me off into this tizzy was reading in the San Francisco Chronicle that Pelosi is considering a trip to Iran:
(04-10) 18:42 PDT — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo, just back from a trip to Syria that sparked sharp criticism from Republicans and the Bush administration, suggested Tuesday that they may be interested in taking another diplomatic trip - to open a dialogue with Iran.
The Democratic speaker from San Francisco and Lantos, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, were asked at a press conference in San Francisco Tuesday whether on the heels of their recent trip to the Middle East they would be interested in extending their diplomacy in the troubled region with a visit to Iran.
To say that I am outraged is an understatement. Mrs. Pelosi, you have no authority to speak for anyone outside of your San Francisco district. Please mind your mandate. This is arrogance that is beyond the pale.

2Yeah, and just where in the hell is the STATE DEPARTMENT??? They should revoke her passport and tax-payer funded travel immediately!
Arrogance doesn’t even begin to describe what this is about. It’s time to call for her resignation!

3Houston, we got a brand new problem:
A Liberal Death Wish?
The lede in this story involves Pelosi and Lantos being open to another diplomatic trip, this one to Iran. But this last paragraph shouldn’t be buried. The legislation is already proposed. Didn’t we learn anything from Clinton and Korea? And what about non-proliferation? Now we’re simply going to give everyone nuke capability? Are they nuts?
Lantos noted that “with the speaker’s support,” he has co-sponsored legislation in the House that calls for making available to all countries — including Iran — nuclear fuel for peaceful purposes under international oversight by establishing a “nuclear fuel bank.”
“So if the Iranian president says that he is developing (nuclear material) for peaceful purposes, we are assisting him in that process,” said Lantos, who anticipated the legislation could pass as early as May.

8The Logan Act aside, I am trying to look at it from a different angle. She has taken it upon her self to play President when she has only been elected Representative. A Senator would have more mandate in that at least a Senator represents an entire state. Imagine the captain of the Baltimore Ravens taking it upon himself to represent all NFL players to a TV network. Imagine a union steward in the warehouse taking it upon himself to represent Safeway supermarkets to some city mayor.
Legality aside, it is Just Plain Wrong. Her mandate is to represent one district of California, nothing more. Until we all get to vote her “shadow president” she needs to mind her own business and stop sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong.

10Get used to it guys. I heard from Hastert’s office today because I called them about this. What they told me was they “can’t” do anything about Pelosi! When I asked why, all I got was some song and dance about what they couldn’t do. I still asked them to see what they could do. If they “can’t” ask Pelosi to step down, I don’t know who can! Anybody?
That’s the last vote Hastert gets from me…PERIOD!! “We can’t” is EXACTLY the wrong answer as far as I’m concerned! So they’re going to let some little Tin-pot dictator from San Francisco tell them what they can do or not do. Lovely!
It’s sickening the way they are caving to everything! Pelosi and her thugs are happy to meet with Syria and Iran but have refused to meet with President Bush unless it’s on their own terms and on their own turf. Damn these people!

11I think it could be fairly easily stopped with a simple press conference just before she embarks on her next trip abroad. All he needs to do is come right out in plain language aimed at the foreign leaders to remind them that Pelosi speaks only for her own district and nobody else and then address the American people and remind them that there is important business to be done right here, right now in congress that *is* her responsibility to attend to.
He might even chime in that she should get her regular work finished she she goes traipsing off on her exotic vacations. That might get a chuckle.
