According to CNN as reported by UPI, General Petraeus has described the progress in Anbar as “breathtaking”. Those are strong words to come from our top field commander in Baghdad but I am seeing other indications he might well be right.
The Anbar Salvation Front is now making noises about the “immanent defeat” of al Qaida in Anbar. They have recently begun chasing bands of insurgents out of the province across provincial borders with the permission of the neighboring provincial governments. Currently the Front is pushing them into Babil province into the area we had called “The Triangle of Death” where it appears al Qaida might soon know the place by the same name.
The Iraqi daily al Mada reported that the Front captured the Minister of Finance for the Islamic State of Iraq and further reports that US forces were not informed of the operation because the Front concluded that the delay could have resulted in its failure as its success depended on speed and surprise. Interestingly, al Mada also reported that another reason US forces were not informed was that the Front is concerned that Iraqis working with US forces are passing information to the enemy. They reportedly felt that informing our forces could have allowed the suspects to be tipped off and cause them to flee before they could be arrested and endanger the mission and their people.
This speaks volumes on how quickly the Iraqis are progressing. Not only are they apparently able to develop their own intelligence, but they are acting on it on their own initiative and weighing operational risks to take greatest possible advantage of the moment even if that means keeping us in the dark on a particular mission. They must fully understand that not informing us places them at greater risk of a “friendly fire” incident but overall, this is extremely refreshing news.
Also reported from Iraq is news that sectarian killings are down for a second consecutive month. I have also noted a distinct shift in the pattern of attacks across Iraq over the past several weeks. In December and January mass casualty events were happening at a fairly even pace. Civilian deaths were spread across the month and the toll one week not much different than the next. Now I am seeing long periods of no mass casualty attacks punctuated by brief furies of attacks spanning a day or two followed again by quiet. It would now appear that many of their cells have been disrupted and the remaining operators are coordinating their activity to produce maximum impact with what resources remain at their disposal.
While Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi fiddle away in Washington using our troops for their personal political games, operations in Iraq appear to be making dramatic progress. Much of this progress is in the support and financial networks supporting the terrorists and will not bear tangible fruit for a few weeks. A trainer and facilitator of suicide bombers was eliminated earlier this week. While the bombers that have already been trained and placed have yet to perform their grisly deeds, this recent elimination of the support structure that produces them bodes well for a reduction in future bombings.
As terrorists are pursued and destroyed in Anbar, Babil, and Diyala provinces, the security situation inside Baghdad should also improve. I don’t believe I am being overly optimistic when I say that I believe that things have already turned the corner. The “root system” of the insurgent networks is being severely damaged and the ability to support the vines that reach into the neighborhoods with their poisonous fruit will soon begin to wither.
UPDATE: More at The Strata-Sphere
We are on the verge of two defeats: al Qaeda in Anbar and Dems in America. Lesson to Senator Surrender Рnever promise defeat and then fail to come through. It’s worse than promising success and then failing.

1No wonder Pelosi and Murtha were AWOL yesterday at Gen. Petraeus’ briefing. Then they marched into the well and led the Democrats’ friendly fire attack (Surrender Bill) against Petraeus and the valiant troops.
Isn’t it interesting that the House vote and today the Senate vote will be allowed to suck up all the oxygen and the MSM will not notice the great news from Iraq. Will some Republican leader please speak up and end the friendly fire coming from the Democrat Congress?

2Bobby, the problem is that press releases come from the government every day showing the good news. Here is one example. The problem is that we can’t force the MSM to carry these stories. Republican leaders can speak until they are blue in the face but the media will never pass their words along. At least not in context. The UPI article on the “Breathtaking Progress” story carried a headline of “More work to be done in Iraq” and General P’s comment on the progress got mention only at the bottom of the article in one single sentence immediately followed by less positive information. The exact wording was:
Petraeus also said progress in the Sunni-run Anbar province “is something that is breathtaking,” CNN reported.
Petraeus said “we have work to do” in other areas, including reducing the number of car bombings.
The papers have an agenda to support the Democratic party position and there is simply nothing we can do to force a paper to report content that might be counter to that agenda.
What we CAN do is support media outlets such as Fox News and The Washington Times that aren’t afraid to give a more balanced view. If those outlets succeed, things will change. Media is fundamentally a business and they will produce what sells at some point or they will die.

3Thanks Crosspatch, and thanks for your postings. They are well done.
No disagreement, here. The MSM agenda is so obvious. I cancelled my subscriptions to the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News a couple of years ago (owned by same CO.). They call all the time to offer almost free subscriptions just to get their numbers up. I give them an earfull about their severe left-wing bias, distortions, and automatic repeating of the pro-terrorist junk from the NYT and AP. Still, they call and offer nearly free subscriptions. Same thing with the electronic media. I never give Nielson a chance to count me as a viewer of NBC, CBS, ABC, or CNN, MSNBC, etc. (except for Glenn Beck).
Little things like this we all can do. We don’t have to sit by idle.
But we must motivate our leaders to lead. I’m afraid I don’t buy the argument that it’s no use to speak out. They all have websites. And you and Mac and a host of others are there to amplify what they say. But they don’t seem to know how to fight back. Just a few declarative sentences will give able bloggers like you great material. But we hear little or nothing. Pelosi and Murtha AWOL yesterday, then voting to surrender. Not noted by anyone. They both should be innundated with demands they resign, just like Reid.
Thanks for your great work, but if our leaders don’t become more aggressive in the face of the Democrat-MSM juggernaught, many good but despairing Republicans will embrace candidates that have no chance of winning an election. If good Republicans don’t start becoming wariors, I fear for a disastrous third-party movement. Then where will we be? These are not normal times. We really can’t afford to wait for the next election to begin to stand up to the Democrats. The Sorros funded war-rooms are already geared up for that.

4There is one important way we can all speak out that carries a lot of weight with most elected officials. They key is not to do it very often but to reserve it for when it really counts, like now because if you do it too often as an individual, it tends to lose the impact.
Sit down and take out some writing paper and a pen. In a respectful manner, express your concerns to your elected officials in your own hand. I generally say three letters but five might be in order now. One to your Congressional Representative and one to each of your Senators. In this case one to the Speaker and one to the Majority Leader might not hurt.
A hand written letter carries more weight than a thousand emails or a million signatures on some Internet petition. Particularly if it is from someone they rarely hear from. It carries so much weight because it shows that you took some effort to take time out of your day and directly address that official. It tells them that you were willing to inconvenience yourself to speak your piece. You might compose it on a computer but don’t print it or type it, write it out in your own hand. Be respectful but clearly state your concerns. Don’t simply call names and rant.
Those soldiers over there are amazing. Everyone that sees them in action says so. Journalists walk away from their experiences there with their minds changed. We can not allow their efforts to have been in vain. We have sacrificed too much an the Iraqis have sacrificed even more and suffered too much to toss it all away now.
Those hand written letters, particularly the ones from folks that they generally don’t hear from are real eye openers. They carry a lot of weight because so few take the time to do that anymore. It says a lot about how seriously you feel about what you are saying. And they do notice.

7Nice post that cuts through the fog.
I agree with the support for FOX and we keep one TV tuned in 24/7. I think Clinton(Wallace) kicked off the start of the Democrat boycott campaign. FOX never says a word but you can’t avoid noticing that only Dem talking heads (usually lower level) will come on. Democrat Politicans are Chicken. Invisible Dean exposed it this week with his ‘ban the media’.
I have good Senators but I might take your advice and put pen to paper. Plus, I get mad before the phone call is over.
I disagree slightly on handling the media though. I have been ranting that it had to come from Congressmen (not the WH) for a long time. This Party needs some creative people working on cutting through. Mitch McConnell does a good job with straight talk about serious subjects but I watched him yesterday and just shook my head. He is still playing this like an adult. He is dealing with naughty kids who have managed to tie him up and taking them all for a joyride. When asked if he thought Reid should resign, McConnell says that is Dem business. Asked 3 times and he repeats. These Congressmen think they can keep their hands clean and only give adult answers. It is much, much, much too late. This is exactly the way they handled the Dems in the orginal committees and confirmations. That would be fine except the Dems have the MSM doing the work and this bunch of Pugs MUST find a way through. McConnell missed (deliberately) an opportunity. The way the Dem/MSM works is that they get someone to say or write the deed….then they all get on the horn and repeat the orginal. Then they repeat each other, etc.
Number 1 job of all today should be that each of them put their face on a camera and ask the Dems if they are waiting for Tuesday to send the bill to the President. Have Senators repeating this the entire day…..over and over. This is not trivial. The public has been sold a pack of lies while they sat back and acted like the indulgent adults. If we expect the troops to fight a war, I expect all of us to get our hands dirty and help them. We can NOT help the troops unless we can find a way through the MSM lies. People are fighting the wrong issue……the Dems are the most corrupt, incompetent bunch of boobs that ever came down the pike BUT they have a MSM ARMY that has almost defeated our troops because our troops can’t get to them. I say that the Republican Congress can but won’t.
