Let me say this up front: Sam Brownback is a good Senator.¬† I like the way he has stood on immigration, and how he has been willing to call things as he sees them.¬† That said, his campaign’s cheap shot at Mitt Romney over Romney’s reaction to General Pace’s comments is why I’ve gotten sick of this clas sof conservatives.¬† When I referred to the “zampolit wing” earlier, that cheap shot is what I was referring to.

In the interests of full disclosure, I’m leaning towards backing Romney at this juncture.¬† He’s ahead of Giuliani in my book by a slim margin.¬† But this is speaking to what I view as a big problem.¬† I thought that the goal was to win hearts and minds to back conservatism, not to set out a sign that said, “Only True Believers Need Apply”.

Romney’s comments, quite frankly, were not even that bad.¬† I can see how he might view the comments General Pace made as being inappropriate in a way.¬† General Pace is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, not¬†the Moralist-in-Chief of the United States of America.¬† That said, his comments were not bad in and of themselves, they were in defense of the policy that was in place, and¬†Governor Romney has not said he should be fired¬†over them.¬† There’s no foul here on anyone’s part.

Brownback needs to seriously think about the tone of his electronic outreach.¬† I’m pro-life (I favor outlawing abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is in danger).¬† I support the traditional definition of marriage.¬† That said, I admit I have been considering blogging against Brownback for President, despite the fact I like a lot of where he stands.¬†¬†If I do, the conduct of his¬†supporters are going to end up right up there¬†with his support for the Parents Television Council that I may cite when urging people to vote against him if it comes to that.¬† Wolf, in the past, labeled those who objected to some of his stridency against the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court of being party hacks who had sold their souls.¬† Is that really what Senator Brownback wants his message to be?

Wolf’s cheap shots at Romney are a poor reflection on a Senator who has served his state and the country well, and who can make a good case for himself.¬† One would hope that Senator Brownback will keep this campaign positive, rather than throw cheap shots.
