Captain’s Quarters has, as Mac has noted earlier, called for throwing Attorney General Gonzales under the bus, for either lying or ineptitude.
In a real sense, the Democrats and media have proven to be far more capable of understanding the weaknesses of the GOP Coalition than we ourselves have.¬† As some comments on the latest Captain’s Quarters post note, the Democrats just have to level the accusations or get a politically motivated indictment, and some conservatives will join in the fire, opening a second front.¬† We saw it with Tom DeLay and Scooter Libby.
There comes a point when we need to re-examine how we handle things, especially when we know that our reactions are being counted on.¬† And when people show that they will not do this, and instead proceed to do the same things that have helped the Democrats beat us, it has a deleterious effect, just like Ann Coulter’s use of epithets in the past couple of CPACs.
And if we let that continue, what does that say about us?

1It says many conservatives are too worried about political correctness instead of standing for what they believe in. Conservative politicans have become way too worried about perceptions and what the “left” might say. Why do they give a damn about what the left says? They didn’t vote Bush and other republicans in? People are screaming for someone to grow a backbone and standup to these leftist liars and hypocrits.
If they actually stood up for themselves and defended their actions, instead of hearing the jeers they’re all so worried about they’d hear cheers.

2There was a time when I believed the Democratic party, if it continued down the path of lies and vitriol would become diminished.
Today, I am more concerned that republicans have given up the fight against the “deception party” and are more than willing to surrender under fire.
Harriet Miers, Scooter Libby, John Bolton, Alberto Gonzales, Donald Rumsfeld, (these are just a few examples of our willingness to bow to the voices of republican detractors.)
Perhaps the “big names” in the blogoshpere someday will learn that there are many who would much rather fight the fight (or at the very least wait for all the facts) than surrender upon request.

3MacRanger,
As Terrye suggested at JOM last night, I posted the following at Captain’s Quarters:
“This is my first time to post here. I’m disappointed when reading your position regarding Gonzales.
From what I have read so far, Gonzales followed the standard operating procedures. I did not see where Gonzales lied or showed ineptitude or incompetence in his job performance. In managing a very large group, Gonzales is not required to know everything that’s going on under him.
I agree that we should not accept either in the office of the highest-ranking law enforcement officer of the United States, regardless of whether he is a Republican or Democrat. America existed before the Bush administration, and it will exist after it, and we had better insist on a level of competence and/or honesty that exceeds what we’re getting at the moment — or else we will live to regret it in later adminstrations.
But by the same token, we expect our Congress to treat our public officers with integrity and high morals. Congress’ performance and treatment towards our public officers in the last twenty years have been deplorable to the point where some people, such as Libby, have been indicted and convicted for a missing crime.
Gonzales may not be smart but he may remain a high ranking law officer with integrity and high morals but he was grilled the treatment from Congress that he does not deserve to get. The harder and longer he was grilled by Congress, the more “confusion” came out.
We are making a serious mistake by throwing Gonzales under the bus, rather than focusing on the process to prevent show trials from happening.
You say:
“You don’t like the policies of the Democrats? Vote against them; I do. But I’m not going to accept incompetent and deceptive leadership from a Cabinet official just because his resignation would please Democrats.”
I don’t like the policies of the Democrats. So I vote against them. While I expect competent and non-deceptive leadership from a Cabinet official, I expect the same from Congress treating our Cabinet Officials!! Gonzales’ resignation means that Bush will never be able to nominate anyone just as good or better than Gonzales. The Democratic Congress will not let him.”

4I like the Captain, but I also feel he is too willing to throw Republicans like Gonzales or Libby under the bus wheels at the first hint of imagined impropriety. The Dims are playing smash-mouth hardball politics; we need to play the same game or we will be eviscerated.

5I noticed a while back that the tone had changed at CQ.
