The motive for the Democratic “gang-bang” on Gonzales is becoming clearer each day.
“WASHINGTON (AP) - Pushing back at what they say has been one of the most secretive administrations in decades, congressional Democrats launched “Sunshine Week” Wednesday with bills to increase public access to government activities and protect whistleblowers.
The House was to vote on four open government bills, including one aimed at government foot-dragging in answering the millions of Freedom of Information Act requests it receives every year.
The White House on Wednesday voiced opposition to the FOIA bill, saying it was “premature and counterproductive” to legislate new requirements on federal agencies before they have a chance to implement changes the president previously outlined.
The White House also issued a veto threat on another bill that would reverse a Bush administration decision making it easier for presidents to withhold their own records from public scrutiny.
The Senate Judiciary Committee, meanwhile was holding a hearing on a parallel FOIA bill promoted by Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and John Cornyn, R-Texas.”
Forget about the free access to information for all - that’s a watershed. However it’s interesting that they are at the same time pushing for Gonzales to resign. It would be extremely helpful to have whistleblower protection to those who the DOJ has identified as being leakers of classified information.
