Just in, as expected the Senate version of the Cut and Run Resolution failed:
“WASHINGTON - The Senate gridlocked on the Iraq war in a sharply worded showdown on Saturday as Republicans foiled a Democratic attempt to rebuke President Bush over his deployment of 21,500 additional combat troops.
The vote was 56-34. That was six short of the 60 needed to advance the measure, which is identical to a nonbinding resolution that Democrats pushed through the House on Friday.
‚ÄúThe Senate, on behalf of the American people, must make it clear to the commander in chief that he no longer has a rubber stamp in Iraq,‚Äù said Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., in the final moments before the vote.”
So much for Dingy Harry’s first real stand as Majority Leader. Yet seven more White Flagger Republicans join our list of those who will find retribution for their vote.
Meanwhille the backlash has begun as (rubbing my eyes) the Washington Post wacks Rep. Murtha’s extortion of the President and the troops.
“Mr. Murtha has a different idea. He would stop the surge by crudely hamstringing the ability of military commanders to deploy troops. In an interview carried Thursday by the Web site MoveCongress.org, Mr. Murtha said he would attach language to a war funding bill that would prohibit the redeployment of units that have been at home for less than a year, stop the extension of tours beyond 12 months, and prohibit units from shipping out if they do not train with all of their equipment. His aim, he made clear, is not to improve readiness but to “stop the surge.” So why not straightforwardly strip the money out of the appropriations bill — an action Congress is clearly empowered to take — rather than try to micromanage the Army in a way that may be unconstitutional? Because, Mr. Murtha said, it will deflect accusations that he is trying to do what he is trying to do. “What we are saying will be very hard to find fault with,” he said.”
Like I said on the radio show today, Murtha sounds like he and Al Qaeda have similar goals.
UPDATE I: Hot Air with the breakdown and more on the vote:
“The only Republicans to vote with the Dems last time were Coleman and Susan Collins. Joining them today: John Warner, Olympia Snowe, Arlen Specter, Chuck Hagel, and Gordon Smith. Not voting: McCain, who was out campaigning, Lisa Murkowski, Bob Bennett, Thad Cochran, Bob Corker, Kit Bond, John Ensign, Jon Kyl, Orrin Hatch, and of course Tim Johnson, who‚Äôs still recuperating from his stroke. All are Republicans except Johnson. Reid was hoping to get Lamar Alexander and Larry Craig to cross the aisle, since both are up for reelection in two years and were rumored to be wavering, but he couldn‚Äôt pull it off.
…Of the seven Republicans who voted for cloture, only Snowe and Specter aren‚Äôt facing reelection in 2008.”

1We still need to contact Warner and the White Flag Senate Republicans because the vote’s too close. The Democrats are not going to quit with today’s vote. They’ll continue to come back with their own resolutions with hope of swaying far more Republicans to their side.
The success of this surge may destroy their efforts this time, though.

2Every day Murtha and Pelosi make it crystal clear that they do NOT support the troops OR the country. Pelosi is laughing with glee at the prospect of toppling the President. They have announced it, LOUDLY!
What more evidence is needed?

3I also heard that one of the “no shows” for a vote on the resolution was John McCain. WTF?? Did he really think it was more important to campaign than to STOP this insane vote today? He’s just one more who apparently thinks that his political career is more important than supporting our troops. He was joined in not voting by eight other Republicans and one Democrat (Tim Johnson of South Dakota) who at least has the excuse that he recovering from life threatening illness! REGARDLESS of the lack of SIX votes to advance the measure for debate, McCain has exhibited reckless and thoughtless disregard for what is at stake. He should stand with other Republicans (who DID vote for this) at the “Wall of Shame” for not thinking it important enough!
He, being a former POW and knowing (just like Representative Sam Johnson) what its like to be cut off from support during a time of war and in confinement as a POW for more than 7 YEARS!! What is McCain’s excuse for not being a leader of his party and, at least, TRYING to stop his fellow Republicans from signing on to this atrocity? And don’t give me that garbage about he had plans he couldn’t cancel! John McCain wants to be President…well, he apparently can’t even lead his own party let alone the country. I will NOT vote for such a candidate. Period!

4Geez! I thought Chia’s idea was stupid…looks like he just passed the “disease” on to Hillary (via Free Republic):
U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the early front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, has called for a 90-day deadline to start pulling American troops from Iraq.
Clinton, the wife of former President Bill Clinton, has been criticized by some Democrats for supporting authorization of the war in 2002 and for not renouncing her vote as she seeks the U.S. presidency in next year’s election.
“Now it’s time to say the redeployment should start in 90 days or the Congress will revoke authorization for this war,” the New York senator said in a video on her campaign Web site, repeating a point included in a bill she introduced on Friday.
…..
I’ve got an idea, Hillary…why don’t you go “revoke” yourself! If there’s any justice you’ll get what you’ve been begging for…a one-way ticket back to Arkansas. Sorry Arkansas.
