Think of this as the Bush peace offering to the Democrats before his lunch date with the Dragon.
UPDATE: After listening to Bush at the press conference, it would appear that the Democrats got a new president as well.
Sheesh!
UPDATE II: Disturbing info on Rumsfeld’s replacement, former CIA director Robert Gates:
“On at least one Persian Gulf issue, Gates has been associated with a different approach than the one now being pursued. In the summer of 2004, Gates and former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski co-chaired a task force sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations that argued for opening a dialogue with Iran. The task force‚Äôs report contended that the lack of American engagement with Iran had harmed American interests, and advocated direct talks with the Iranians. ‚ÄúJust as the United States has a constructive relationship with China (and earlier did so with the Soviet Union) while strongly opposing certain aspects of its internal and international policies, Washington should approach Iran with a readiness to explore areas of common interests while continuing to contest objectionable policy,‚Äù said the report, entitled ‚ÄúIran: Time for a New Approach.‚Äù
UPDATE III: Plame’s ex-flame Larry Johnson is back and tying Gates back to the Iran Contra scandal.
Heh….Imagine LCJ lecturing someone on integrity. Don’t get me started.
UPDATE IV: Rick Moran gives the Rummy Obituary, and asks the question:
“The question uppermost in my mind is‚Ķ
WHY IN GOD’S NAME DIDN’T YOU DO IT BEFORE THE ELECTION!
I doubt it would have made any difference.
Besides if you saw the news conference Rummy looks glad to be out of there with big smile on his face. Remember, he previously submitted a resignation to Bush several times in the past. It may just have been his idea to step down.
