On Rick Warren and Politics
First, I ought to say that I’m our Church’s Celebrate Recovery leader. For those of you who don’t know what that is it’s a recovery ministry founded at Rick Warren’s (Purpose Driven Life) Saddleback church back in 1991.
While I embrace the model of the Gospel and twelve steps (has worked for me for many, many years), and for others whom I minister to, I’m not a fan of Rick Warren or of the packaged PD ministries.
I’ve been a trained Christian minister for many years and I have found many things that Rick Warren to be from the “strange” to the outright “error-ridden”. He does have a lot of good teachings as well and I don’t doubt his faith or insincerity, but as I warn people, “buyer beware”.
However, he’s been in the news of late specifically with his invite of Barak Obama to a Global Aids conference, along with statements he’s made on Iran and Syria. Barak as you should know is pro-choice, which in the eyes of many evangelicals (myself included) is simply a non negotiable subject and reason to dissassociate with any one who calls themself a Christian yet supports the murder of the unborn.
The situation is escalating according to Byran over at Hot Air and it reminds me why (although many of my brethren do it), it’s best for a pastor to stay out of the political circus and stick to what they were called to do – preach Christ.
Not that it’s necessarily wrong, but it always leads to these kinds of things and detracts from the most important thing a man can do.
