Bush dismantling the MSM in the Rose Garden today, and drawing the line in the sand. From Fox News:
“Bush said he wanted to make sure U.S. intelligence personnel were not fearful of doing their jobs.
“They don’t want to be tried as war criminals,” he said. “They expect our government to give them clarity about what is right and what is wrong.”
“These are decent citizens who don‚Äôt want to break the law,” he said.
Bush promised to work with Republican leaders on Capitol Hill who have split with him on the issue, including Arizona Sen. John McCain.
“I have one test for the legislation,” he said. “The intelligence community must be able to tell me that this vital program will continue.”
Four Republicans, led by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., joined Democrats on Thursday on the Armed Services Committee and voted 15-9 for the measure that Bush opposes.
Three other Republicans joined all 11 panel Democrats in supporting the measure: Sens. McCain, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Susan Collins of Maine.
In a letter sent Thursday to McCain, Powell said Bush’s proposal to redefine the Geneva Conventions would encourage the world to “doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism” and “put our own troops at risk.”
Bush said his former Secretary of State’s criticism was “flawed logic.”
“If there’s any comparison between the compassion and decency of the American people and the terrorist tactics of extremists ‚Äî it’s flawed logic,” Bush said”
Masterful. Bush is saying, “If you don’t give our people the tools they need to protect the country the program – the interrogation of terrorist – will stop.” The ball is now back in McCain’s and the Democrat’s court. You want to demonize our men and women in the military and the IC, while giving the kit gloves to known terrorist? Make your position known. What’s it going to be? Your maniacal egos, or the safety of the American people?

1Mac,
I was listening to Mark Levin last night. He had Jackie Mason on. He asked Jackie about the McCain ammendment. Jackies response was (paraphrasing) Instead of worrying about people chopping our heads off we’re now going to worry if the terrorists are too hot, or too cold, or the chair is to high or the chair is too low.
Nice, simple, and to the point.

2I consider McCain to be as guilty as the NYTs on labeling our nation as torturers. He and Graham linked up on the Abu Ghraib Hearings and it was DISGRACEFULL. As the Senator from OK stood up and said “I am outraged by the the outrage at this table”. Instead of fighting for a better view of America, he (McCain) fought to keep this issue front and center so the NYTs could keep it on the front page.
If this man was not mentally able to handle this issue since he was a victim of torture, then he should have taken the route of a judge when they have conflicts of interests. That would have been the honorable way instead of painting all the rest of us as immoral. He has pointed at every opportunity at the President—-and this new Gang say words like ‘immoral treatment’ yak yak yak….
Their moral superiority will not keep one American from ever being tortured. It is all about them.
The President is NOT the immoral party in this debate. This bunch is practicing a ‘Jimmy Carter’ type attack and they do not speak for me or my values on this subject. I do not need Carter or them to be my conscience.
The President summed up nicely when he said that “International Courts should not determine how we protect ourselves.” I join him in not signing onto any sucide pacts.

3Is this pathetic or what. Can anyone believe the tactics of this committee. Have they gone insane?
Here’s a video of the some of the smack now in Bushes’ presser today.
“This is by far the pissiest press conference Bush has given. He‚Äôs furious. I assume his feet are manacled behind the microphone. Otherwise, he‚Äôd be stalking across the stage, tearing apart the podium, and occasionally leaping into the crowd to rip out David Gregory‚Äôs heart‚ĶRead on”

4The Warm Oatmeal Bath of Diversion [posted by Jimmie]…
Digby, over at Hullabaloo has an interesting post this evening. He seems to believe that the President hopes that other countries, especially North Korea, decide to violate the Geneva Conventions. He bases this belief on an exchange between the Preside…
